I wonder if anyone knows of an actual Adventure by the Name; Zarakan's Lair (or Zarakan's Dungeon).




I got this book from a large E-Bay Auction lot a while ago and just now got to look through it.

I bought this from a Chesterton, IN  seller.




Down in the Dungeon


Copyright 1981, 79 pages of artwork/sketches.


It is a pictographic representation of a fantasy adventuring party (at least 10 different PCs, probably more) going through Zarakan's Dungeon.


Each page shows either the enemies faced or the adventuring party delving in the Dungeon in the order of advancement through the dungeon by the adventurers.


Four pages show many various weapons used, and/or seen through the adventure.







All the artwork is by Don Greer.


Not sure what Rob Stern added to the books contents.


(Perhaps he wrote the actual Dungeon that was sketched by Don Greer)




At the bottom right of the last scan, you will see the Gold Dragon protecting what looks like the main treasure vault.


But beyond that vault there is something more.......


See the tunnel leading to the right from that room.... 8O




Might this person (Don Greer) be the same Don Greer who was an illistrator/Animator for the following TV Cartoons?

Defenders of the Earth


Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

The Address listed as contact for the web site is the same as in the book on the Copyright page so there is no doubt its the same company.


But I saw nothing on the site that makes me think they publish anything that is not related to (or taken directly from) Flying and/or Air War games.

Nope, not an actual adventure....

Looking through the pages it seems to be a running story (told through sketches) of the dungeon delvers adventures through Zarakan's Dungeon.

I suspect that the dungeon was a home brew by Rob Stern (and/or Don Greer) and was never actually published or if so, on a very limited basis.
I have never heard of it, but still I find it VERY odd that this sketchbook would be published with no thought to publishing the Adventure also.

Rob Stern has several published books, all through Squadron/Signal.
All of them are about WWII and/or War Planes.

Yeah. I got the impression that it was stack of illustrations for each location, and an over all map, and that you wrote it yourself based on the illustrations and map.

It just has the right look to it, if you know what I mean.  Will have to add that to my want list.

"Down in the Dungeon" 1981 Squadron Signal Publications artwork by Rob Stern and Don Greer, known for his aviation and military artwork sold round the world.  The original gouache painting from Down in the Dungeon will be going up for auction at Heritage Auctions (ha.com) on October 4th, 2021, bidding will begin approximately on September 13th, 2021.  This artwork is over 40 years old.  The original book was a scenario for a freelancing game..
