Hi everyone,

I recently acquired a Third-Alpha printing of the First Edition AD&D MONSTER MANUAL with a flaw I’ve never encountered before on a hardcover AD&D rulebook — some bubbling/blistering/cracking on the front cover.

Has anyone else ever encountered something like this before? Any idea what may have caused it, and how likely is it that this might cause the cover artwork to flake off/break away?

Thank you in advance for any insights!

Cheers,
JohnH aka WanderingMonster

P.S.: I have more photos, but this site has a size limit on photos that can be attached/uploaded…

Yes, I've seen this on many Players Handbooks. No idea why, probably shoddy quality control. I have not seen the covers flake off from this "bubbling".

It's a little hard to tell from the photo, but I had a similar book some years ago. No sign of water damage, but a bubbling-like stripe down the center of the cover. I took it as the printed material that was stuck to the cardboard wasn't entirely flush when applied, similar to someone attempting to put window tinting on their car and getting a lot of bubbles because they didn't do a very good job.

Print error (or assembly error) collectible, maybe? ;-)

Yep. Mine was a PHB as well. Early print.

Yes, I have an early MM with the same issues and I recently sold another one with precisely this "issue".

If I may ask/be a nosy git, did this “issue” affect the price you were able to sell your MM for?

Sorry for the late reply - I missed your post.

It was a  5th Print Monster Manual in VG/FN and I sold it for about 85USD + Shipping and was quite happy with that... as was the buyer who was thrilled with what they got.
