I once went to a gaming con in Raleigh, NC hosted by the gaming club at NC State called Tri-Con.  I believe it was even advertized in Dragon in later years.  I still have my first place certificate from a D&D Tourney I won there which specifically says "Tri-Con 3."  I won that in 1984, I believe, which means this pictured trophy, or whatever it was, might have been for Tri-Con number 1.  However, I was always under the impression that the "Tri" in Tri-Con was for what is know as the "Research Triangle."  Maybe this will help you in your search.
