1. Firstly, picture #5 does not belong with the rest...  :wink:

2. The S3 is a 1st print and matches the description here on the Acaeum, thus helping to solidify that info.



3. The oddball. Yeah, the Holmes box is crap. The interesting part about this is the box bottom matches the description of a 5th print [Bottom of box shows rulebook, neither dice nor chits, module B1 (pre-production print), and has a Wizard logo]; the rulebook, however, is a 3rd Edition December 1979 (chits attached to the book; no ISBN on copyright page) which shows up in 6th prints.



Could we have yet another 6th variant with old (5th) box overstock? Does anyone else have a Holmes set such as this? I have no reason to believe it is a Frankenstein, but you never know.

This is what I was considering having an auction for at GenCon. I never have been there, and thanks to health reasons may never, but at least I can contribute to keeping it open another year (correct me if I'm wrong, but you guys get a part of the auction price, right?)

Anyhoo, knew I should have stuck to the main point of the thread. Silly me.

Can anyone confirm having a 6th print Holmes set with a 5th print box bottom?

Also, I found a single-sided sheet entitled "What Dungeons & Dragons is All About; How to Explain D&D". I've not run across this before. Anyone know the origin of these (and don't say TSR all you smartiepants!). It's not worth anything as far as I'm concerned, having been photocopied at a book store (it has the store stamp on it). I'm just curious.

ST, from your comment, I'm assuming you haven't run across this Acaeum page:

Understanding D&D / What D&D Is All About was a promotional flier released in early 1979 and distributed to retailers, in an effort to educate the public on the merits of the game. It consists of four pages (a single 11" x 17" sheet, printed front and back and then folded in the middle to form four 8.5" x 11" pages). The first two pages are labeled "Understanding D&D", and provide an overview of the game for retailers, including a section on the sales potential and how to market the game.  The last two pages are entitled "What Dungeons & Dragons Is All About", and was intended for interested customers.  Its brief overview of the game is followed (on the last page) with a listing of currently-available items.  Incidentally, a small note on page 2 informs retailers that the "What Dungeons & Dragons Is All About" section was also separately available (presumably to be passed out to customers).  (Thanks to Michael Bivens, Leonard Riotto, and Rhea Shelley for this info).  A similar item was apparently available in the United Kingdom around 1977 (unknown if it was also released in the U.S.), and was titled the D&D Explanatory Sheet (in early Games Workshop ads in White Dwarf magazine).  More info on this is needed!  Lastly, an excerpt of this product was released by Uptown Sales, Inc, apparently of their own volition (and presumably without TSR permission).  It is an 8.5"x11" page, printed on both sides, with the TSR wizard logo and name on one side and the Uptown Sales name and address on the other (thanks to Paul Stormberg for this info, and the scan).


I've never seen this item in the flesh, only the later more common "Your Personal Invitation to Adventure" (also detailed on the above page). It's rare enough that the Acaeum page doesn't even attempt a value. Nice bonus in your lot.

What is the name of the store on the copy you have?

Nope. I haven't seen that page. Interesting.

It looks like it is a photocopy of page 3 from the "Understanding D&D" 4-page tract. As a photocopy, I wouldn't expect any value. Well, that looks like a cleared up issue. Thanks. (Books Unlimited in Saskatoon FYI)

Now if we can get any confirmation on the Holmes...
