I was browsing in my local used bookstore today and bought a 2nd ed Monstrous Compendium w/slipcase, in immaculate shape. The added bonus was that it had the Rogues Gallery supplement included!
However, when I got it home, I found that the Vol. 1 MC was bound together, still hole punched, but not loose-leaf like any of the other MC volumes.
Anyone else seen this? Every other one I've come across has been loose leaf.

If you believe that ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a game worth playing, you will certainly find it doubly so if you play well.

Was it the Monstrous Compendium Annual by chance? Those were all perfect bound iirc.

I believe that to be the true 1st print but you might want to look at this thread on Tome of Treasures: http://tomeoftreasures.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2378 (My 1st has a correction sticker over the Eastern Vampire side and has its pages torn from the bundle)

I was hoping to get back to the MCs at some point when I can get to them again, but if you can scan or take a clear picture of the individual binders and the front sheet of that bundle I'd appreciate it.

Right, my understanding was that the first print was three-hole punched, not five-hole punched.

And I'm nearly certain that the first run (and maybe more) were supposed to be torn out along perforations, from a larger pack.

I'll try to post pictures in the next couple of days.
However, I believe it is a True 1st Print-I'm looking at a couple of my other MCs and seeing the logo differences, etc.
The vampire entry has not been corrected and the blank monster form is bound to the last entry "Zombie" whereas the instructions are at the front of the bound collection-which does have perforation at the edges.
PS thanks for the link to the other forum-now I have something new to obsess on!
Very pleased to get this MC-only cost me 15 bucks!!

Yes, the first printing had all of the pages bound into a "book" with perforated edges. Each page was meant to be torn out. I had a copy where an impatient previous owner had torn all the pages out very roughly- nearly every one had jagged edges.

I then bought a sealed copy a few weeks ago and tore out the pages myself. It went pretty well, but a few of the pages I had to use scissors along the perforated lines.

I remember buying this as a child when it first came out and it was the same way.

Another thing to note is that the first printing was 3-hole punched instead of 5. Later printings were 5 hole punched like the other Monstrous Compendium expansions.
