I've been collecting for a while but I'd never known this. The Minifigs Fantasy Folk line is actually part of the World of Greyhawk line. I bought a bunch of these recently and was amazed that they were made under licence. Is this news to anyone else?

I recall having #13 at one point (I think it's gone now). At the time, I didn't care if a miniature was 'official' or not. Strangely, I missed out on some things in book form because they weren't 'official' TSR D&D products.

The follies of a 13-14 (?) year old.

All-in-all, from what I remember, I wasn't greatly impressed with the few I saw back then. They seemed 'smaller' than the other minis as well.

Yup!

The best thing about the WoG minis is that the advert sheet gives complete weaponry details for troops of the various kingdoms (Furyondy, Wild Coast cities, etc.).

I'm not well-versed in minis, but I believe Icar is referring to a "Fantasy Folk" line of figures from Minifigs that is distinct from the line of figures explicitly labeled as "World of Greyhawk" (which are detailed in Joe's excellent page linked above).

Icar: is there a product list for the Fantasy Folk line?

I once posted the list of WoG figures from a TSR catalog. So, just to confirm: the Fantasy Folk figures are different from these WoG figures?

The consensus from this 2008 thread was that the Fantasy Folk figures were not officially licensed AD&D figures:

However, this seems to be contradicted by the back of the card posted by Icar, which states:

FANTASY FOLK

FANTASY FOLK are the adventurers who descend in search of treasure into the dungeons and crypts beneath the surface of THE WORLD OF GREYHAWK. FANTASY FOLK are also the monsters and creatures who lurk in those dungeons in wait for the hapless adventurer. Zenopus76 hit it on the head. I am very familiar with the red WOG line but I didn't realize that the fantasy folk minis are also WOG related.

They seem to be 28mm as opposed to 25mm

The ones I have are labeled as follows:

This line directly links Fantasy Folk to the World of Greyhawk. Is isn't implied, it is stated.

The problem is, it doesn't say that their miniatures are officially licenced products, but only that the World of Greyhawk is a licenced product of TSR. Sounds like they were trying to ride the wave.

I wonder if there was a cease and desist order at some point. :?:

Hmm ...

The World of Greyhawk line is certainly more clearly branded as "authorized", with the front of the packaging stating "TSR Presents", "World of Greyhawk TM" and "Approved for use with Advanced Dungeons & Dragons".

Presumably Minifigs licensed the use of the "World of Greyhawk" trademark from TSR, for use in the World of Greyhawk line. But was the use of this trademark on the Fantasy Folk line also specifically authorized under the same or another license? In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I'd presume that because they repeatedly use the trademark, and state that the trademark is licensed from TSR, that these were officially licensed figures. Others may presume differently. They may not be part of the official "World of Greyhawk" line, but Minifigs is certainly making use of the trademark to market them as "for use with" the World of Greyhawk.

There's at least one other line of "authorized" D&D figures from Minifigs:

Stunties on ebay - this is a chap who buys a lot of dwarves!!!! (Insert poor 'small' or 'short' pun as required). I'd bet his specialised collection is second to none (over 3500 feedback, mainly on dwarf minis over the years suggests he's somewhat rabid in his interest) (Not meant as any kind of slight btw - dealt with him once and came across as a decent person, and as fan of Dwarves I'm really quite envious of him)

You can never have too much of something you didn't need in the first place.

I would hazard a guess that they were trying to create a separate line to compete with the other companies making heroic 25mm miniatures. Both Citadel and Grenadier had larger miniatures by 1980 and minifigs was trying to stay in the game.

The FF minis would give them one line for "chainmail" style combat and one for dungeon crawls. I am also guessing that this would be the last of the miniatures produced under license, although I can't find a date anywhere.

Interesting stuff.

I wanted to keep everyone here in the loop because I figured there may be some interest. I asked the people at TMP and got some great replies.

It appears that the vast majority of these figures are from previous ranges. Many have been converted slightly or in some cases big changes. I leave the valuation of this kind of thing to the Acaeum boards.
