I notice an interesting comment from analsludge.  I suspect this aptly named fellow is the same guy who was on here earlier today declaring that he owns a copyright if he loads a book onto a disk.

Dungeons and Dragons is one of the best games in the world! Don't let these nerdy players, corny cartoons, and lame music affect your judgment on this game! The idea, for those who may not know, is that one person is designated a dungeon master (DM). The DM then tells a story in which each player plays a part. Each player chooses a race (human, dwarf, orc, etc), alignment (good, evil, neutral, etc), class (thief, assassin, barbarian) and then conveys what they would like their character to do to the DM (who ultimately decides if the request is valid and incorporates it into the game). You use various dice of 4,6,8,10,12,20, and 100 to score attacks on enemies or dodge traps. You can make up your own stories, which is the best part, or use a pre-made one. Wizards of the Cost produces this product now. If you are interested, look at a Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook. It talks about the game in detail. I highly recommend it to you and your friends!

And then, allegedly one of the actors, though some information seems just a tad "off:"

I'm the guy in the salmon sweater -- the Dungeon Master (supposedly). This was my first commercial job when I moved to Chicago from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

A few tidbits about this commercial:

1. It was never intended to air. Gygax Games, the game company owned by Gary Gygax, who came up with D&D, had never done TV advertising. This was an experiment to see if they liked the idea of doing a commercial that combined animation with live-action players. We got paid for the "demo"; later on, when they decided to use it on the air, we got another, noticeably bigger, payment.

2. The commercial didn't run much, but when it did, they paid dearly for good placement. It ran during several episodes of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.

3. They liked the commercial so much that at the original D&D store (in Wisconsin -- Lake Geneva, I think), the commercial ran on an endless loop.

4. The girl with the dark brown hair was (a very young) Jami Gertz, who later went on to become quite a star: movies like LOST BOYS, SIXTEEN CANDLES, and ENDLESS LOVE; series like ER, SQUARE PEGS, and, most recently, STILL STANDING.

5. The boy with the glasses is Alan Ruck, who starred as Ferris Bueller's best friend in FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, and as Stuart in the series SPIN CITY.

6. None of us had ever played D&D before. We were making up all our chatter, none of it was scripted. It was basically shot in an afternoon at a small studio in Chicago.

Yup, blue sweater geek with glasses is Ruck.
Surprised he didn't mention other movie creds: Speed, Twister, and Star Trek: Generations.

Yup, on Ohio Street. I was doing some radio work for TSR down there around that time, tho I didn't get involved in the TV spots.
