Some of the AD&D items released around the start of the 2nd edition era (1989) are labeled as compatible with both 1st and 2nd edition AD&D. Most/all of these have the 2nd edition AD&D logo on the cover.

However, I know that at least one of these (specifically WG8 Gargoyle, which I own) is decidedly a 1st edition module -- and most assuredly *not* a 2nd edition module -- because of the various mechanical bits contained therein.

For those of you with the other transitional products, do you know which side of the 1st/2nd edition fence they fall on? Are any of them truly hybrids in the sense that the module speaks in terms of both 1st & 2nd edition mechanics and/or offers conversion advice?

Some of the particular ones I'm interested in are:
WG8 Fate of Istus
WG10 Child's Play
WG11 Puppets

I need to look at the list of 1989-ish Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance products. There may be some transitional ones there too.

I'm sorry I don't have any valuable info to add to your topic, but I wanted to reply because I do find this quite interesting. I only own a couple of 2nd edition items. I originally played from 82 - 91 and never owned any 2nd edition items.

I'll take a look at the few 2e items I do own though. I'd be interested in hearing more on this.

I had a chance to check out a copy of FR7 Hall of Heroes (9252).

It has a copyright date of 1989, with a 2nd edition logo on the cover. However, despite the 2nd edition branding, it looks like it contains 1st edition stats:
- Bruenor has a movement rate of 12" (it would be 6" in 2nd edition)
- There are references to the Assassin, Shukenja, and Samurai classes.
- "Magic User" is used as a class name.
- Monster stat blocks are distinctly 1e
- Drizzt's thief skills aren't modeled after the 2e ranger, and there is at least one high-level ranger with 1e style spells.
- and so on...

At some point, I'll update the first post with conclusions as I nail them down.

I own all of the above, but I haven't read them all.  From what I do remember, it seemed that most everything that did come out with the "Compatible with 1st and 2nd Edition AD&D" was actually really 1E stuff with that label slapped on them.  I would tend to assume that all of it leans more to the 1E side than the 2E side.  I think that a lot that material was already written for 1E and it was stuff they didn't want to go to waste, so they marketed it as being for both editions with no real editing happening to truly make it so.  I could be wrong, but that is kinda how I thought of it.  ;)

All in all, modules are pretty easy to use between (1E & 2E) editions without much work, and I think TSR knew that and took advantage of that fact.  lol

Yeah, that sounds reasonable. All of those modules came out as 2e was coming out and they didn't want to go in the hole on them with the people starting 2e, so they slapped the 'compatible' label on them and called it a day.

All the original DL modules are strictly 1st edition, furthermore, they are from the pre-UA era, with some hints of UA from the DL10 module onward (but just small references, for example a thief/acrobat NPC and one or two spells). From the Dragonlance Adventures hardback we start to see the seeds of 2e; actually, it's the first book which introduces specialty priests with spell spheres, and specialty magic-users (though in a slightly different form than the 2e ones)

WG8 Fate of Istus was published as an in-game vehicle to explain the transition from the game's first to second edition iirc.  Similar to the Time of Troubles for FR.
