Not sure if this is the right place for this but given the amount of material shipped by and to members of this site, I'm pretty sure the answer is here somewhere.

The question is what to do when you receive a poorly packed (in a Huggies box without any additional packing material, I shit you not - NPI) parcel from an ebay seller? I haven't been home to check it yet but according to the spouse, the box has broken open (not a big suprise given the contents -18 HC books) and at least one of the books has been rubbed badly.

What I plan on doing is documenting the unboxing step by step so that I can see how much damage was done. I'm not sure how useful it will be (in filing a claim) but it will make me take my time at least (rather than panic/rush mode).

My initial thought was "oh, I paid for insurance so no big deal." until I went to the USPS website and read the FAQ. I guess I should wait to get mad until I can check the contents but it's difficult to say the least.

You take pictures of everything as it arrived, and then as you remove the object to show it was damaged from the shipping, and then say "hey, seller... give me money back." If they don't, you file a "not as described" claim and say "can provide evidence" in it.

Those who can, don't. Those who should not, do.

I think that's what's going to have to happen. I had to twist the seller's arm just to get the stuff shipped and then to receive them in (what I fear to be) a distressed state makes me an unhappy monkey. Unhappy primates tend to throw things (that splatter).

Sorry, venting and I wont get off work for another 4 hours plus commute to worry about it. *shakes fist at the uncaring sky*

maybe I should lay off the drama pills...or caffiene

Anger doesn't help you one bit. In fact, it hurts you. If you think about it, rants, tantrums, attacks, and such all signal that you have no power and have lost the argument. Most anger is a grasp at power.

The truth is you have tremendous power in this situation. Do exactly what you are planning to do by photographing the unpacking. Do not get cute with your communication to the seller but be factual only. If the seller doesn't cave, then you do exactly what serleran suggested. Once Paypal starts yanking his money away, then the seller will likely get angry and hopefully learn a lesson. But give the seller a solid chance to make things right. More times than not, people will do the right thing if given a fair and calm chance.

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

It gets stranger. The seller has sent me a bill (invoiced through ebay) for the cost of the books, shipping, and insurance. I guess because paypal is sitting on the money (filed a dispute after the books hadn't shipped for almost 3 weeks)? I wonder where the confusion is coming from?

I figured out where she came up with the new amount at least. The new (higher) amount is the total of what I paid already plus shipping and insurance charges again. Supposedly there was some sort of shipping mix up the first time the seller attempted to ship them to me.

2 and a half hours till I get to play postal inspector !

(wow, that sounds much worse when you go back and read it)

The box was pretty battered (2 sides were shredded) but apparently Huggies boxes are made of pretty good cardboard as the books came through just fine. Now to clear off that invoice!
