New Paypal policy?

I was trying to make a purchase today through paypal and put it on my credit card. However, since I have a balance in my account, Paypal will no longer let me change the funding source to Credit Card - instead it requires either a balance transfer or a bank account transfer.

Anyone know when Paypal started doing this? It is obviously just another money grab since Paypal charges the same fees regardless of type of payment method used but credit card payments cost them the most.

I noticed it a couple of months ago. Your account must be completely empty for you to be able to charge a credit card payment through paypal, otherwise it will always come out of your funds available first.

From what I gather, it works like this:

1) If you have enough balance to cover the transaction then Credit Card is not an option (paypal won't let you do it). The default is to use your paypal balance but you can use a transfer from your bank account as an alternate funding option.

2) If your paypal balance is not enough to cover the transaction then by default they will use what's left of the balance and take the rest from your bank account. However, you may use your credit card by changing the funding source.

I had a balance of $84 and the transaction I wanted to put onto my credit card was $78 so I moved $7 to my other paypal account and then put it on my credit card.

Ah. You guys are getting that now. It's been like that it the UK for years. You always need to spend the balance of your funds before you can charge anything remaining to your credit card.

Always zero your balance into your bank account, or find small things to buy. That way you can charge the important things to credit cards for the added protection.

I had always assumes that PayPal treated everyone equally regardless of whether they lived in the US, Canada or Europe. Seems they have different rules for different people.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

I get around the whole issue by using the paypal credit card. You can set THAT credit card as your default payment form and you get slightly more than 1% rewards back if you spend a lot on purchases (9500 pts translates into a $100 off ebay coupon). And you're fully protected with no limit if things go wrong.

Only available to US citizens.

Yes Canada. I use mine exclusivley when I am in the US. I avoid the "fee" for converting currency then.
