Making the Thread Bubbles Vanish

Is there a way to make the thread bubbles vanish? By those, I mean the little description box that tells you the first and last post if you mouse-over a thread. Once they're there, it makes clicking on something else difficult, and its damn near impossible to go to the last page of a thread since they tend to hide the numbers.

Maybe no one else has a problem with it, and its just my computer.

I don't have a problem with it but as a preference I would get rid of it - I have never found it helpful.

While mousing over the screen, you have to click your heels together and whisper "No such thing as thread bubbles, no such thing as thread bubbles..."

I find that works nearly every time.

If I move my cursor even slightly, they immediately go away.

Wow, I'd never even seen those before!

I normally click the "View new posts" link on the upper right of the main forum page, and the list displayed doesn't have thread bubbles at all.

Yes, they usually do on my end, too. Sometimes, though, they'll linger and it makes reading the forums nearly impossible since all I get are little thread bubbles and I can't click to something else because there's another in the way. So, if there was a setting to disable them then it would be much easier.

You can turn off javascript entirely, which will fix the problem. However, it may have unintentional side-effects if other sites you visit rely on javascript. (Such as disabling most of the functionality of a certain prosimian-sponsored chat that shall remain nameless...)

If you're using Firefox, there's a bit of software called "noscript" which will allow you to enable javascript on a per-site basis.

Yep, I already use that. Thank you, though. I have it set to allow Javascript for sites marked as favorites -- everything else is automatically denied. So, I suppose I could un-favorite this place or explicitly deny Java here. Hmm.

Once in a while I would have a similar problem where the pop up bubbles wouldn't go away, especially after paging back. I thought it might be a Firefox browser issue (I mostly use OS X 10.4), but I can't remember if I've downloaded an update since that last time, or whether it was just an intermittent problem.

hate 'em. They sometime stick and won't go away... And I shouldn't have to change my browser settings for a site to work correctly.

I've never had a problem with them sticking (on either IE or Chrome, which I'm using now). For those of you with problems, have you updated Java to the latest release (version 6 update 11)? If you haven't, try that first: www.java.com .

If the issue persists, I'll remove it. While I personally like them, there's no point in irritating even a small percentage of our userbase for something that's not terribly useful anyway.

No problem here running Java 6.5. Standard options - scripting of Java applets - enable. IE7.

Can't stand 'em: they even pop up when I'm lurking! :wink:

I sometimes have a hard time getting rid of them, too (Mac OS X 10.6, iMac, Safari). Not even clicking my heels works ...

For those of you with problems, have you updated Java to the latest release (version 6 update 11)?

For a while, it was not compatible with my job (have specific applications that require Java and the new version broke them) so I did not install it. I have now, and it does not fix this problem. It does seem to happen only if the Back button is used.
