Hi all,

I'm toying with the scary notion of DMing again, and there are a few 3/3.5E products I'm considering using, however I'm clueless when it comes to converting version Z with X, hell I'm just plain out of my depth.

Is there a site, a book, guidelines, anything out there?  I'd appreciate any advice including, "Don't. You'll only hurt yourself." :)

Best,

Paul

Wizards had a 2nd Edition D&D to 3rd Edition conversion guide that you may be able to reverse engineer.  The pdf is on this page:

Paul, I recommend you post the Q to either Knights & Knaves @ http://www.knights-n-knaves.com/phpbb/ or Dragonsfoot @ http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/index.php

There are certainly folks here who actively play and have performed such conversions, but I think you'll also find good input at the above two sites.

Reading the other sites I think it boils down to how much time have you got and how thorough do you want to be.  Some people are happy to wing it and more likely than not it will turn out OK but others want all eventualities covered.  Even game balance has to be looked at during conversions and in my opinion the harder you look at it the more difficult it becomes.
Errrr....good luck and if you do spend the next three years converting a 16 page mod I think there is somewhere on Dragonsfoot where you can post it for posterity. :D

Hi Paul,

Over the past 3 or 4 years, I've done quite a few 3.x/d20 to 1st Edition AD&D conversions.  The scope of these conversions have ranged from taking a short 3.5 addy from Dungeon and converting it literally on the fly for my gaming group to doing full adventure conversions for 'in print' versions of the adventures.

I'd be glad to help you with any conversion effort you'd like to undertake.  I'm more than glad to offer general advice about how to approach doing conversions, or if you want more specific help with particular encounters or game elements or 'mechanics translations' I could help with that as well.

If you're interested, lets take it offline.  Drop me a PM here at the Acaeum or send me an email at tacojohndm@yahoo.com.  We could even set up some time for a call as that might be more useful / effecient than trying to frame this up via email.

Thank you all very much for the advice and recommendations.  I do have a tendency to create on the fly, but I was curious if someone had a formula, so to speak.  I suppose I could always work backwards via Mars's suggestion, then backwards again 8O  The 3E backwards two-step.

I'll try and post on the sites listed above and see what pops up.  However, from everyone's comments, conversion sounds like quite the chore.  Such a shame.

Jon, thank you for the generous offer--it's one you may come to regret :)  I have a lot of general questions.  I'll contact you as time permits over the next week or two (I'll send you a pm so you'll know my e-maill address and it can avoid the spam pile).

Great stuff! :)

Don't.  You'll only hurt yourself.  Well, technically an angry mongoose lemur will.

While you're wasting time on that, you could be doing far more important things like....oh, I don't know...writing a post-apocalyptic setting.

D:  I said "toying," not going crazy (no snide comments).  It's something I am considering and thought it better to ask now than later.

Your project is first, period.  I promise.

It's much, much worse going from 1e to 3.0 or 3.5, trust me.  You're going downhill when you're going from 4.0 or 3.x back to 1e :D :D

Perhaps I wasn't clear:  downhill meaning easier to go downhill vs. the uphill battle of converting from AD&D to 3.x, which is much, much worse IMO (especially if you want to balance out the skills and feats properly).

Allan,

Oh I understood you :)  I should have clarified that my growing apprehension  is increasing with each passing day and piece of advice.

Convert up?  That's sheer Madness!  :)
