I was looking over some stuff at RPG.net and notice that a number of the images used in their index are stolen from the Tome of Treasures forums.

I decided to check a few more items and noticed that a number are also take from the Acaeum website.

Sorry didn't finish that message.

I'm kinda a bit pissed off about one website stealing the images from another. It also seems like a number of the images were posted by ShannonA who is listed as an administrator there.

Shannon is an administrator everywhere ... as in: "give it a rest, dude; we know you like games."

If RPG.net is, in fact, lifting images (I have zero use for the place, personally, so I haven't bothered to look), then there's no shortage of irony involved. For example, Shannon is heavily involved at BoardgameNews ...

... a site that doesn't hesitate to pull a hissy fit whenever any of their content is lifted. So, basically, I think it would be fair to ask him: "Hypocrisy much, Shannon?"

I have a slightly different take: it gets the images more readily available, so more people can know what they look like, and what to expect, should they find such a wonderful treasure. It would be best to say where the image was originally found (or "hotlink" it) though... rather than claiming ownership.

Stealing images from other websites without permission and then trying to pass them off as your own without even the slighest attempt to give credit is flat out bullshit.

A quick check of their Judges Guild items also shows that RPG.net ripped off a bunch from there too.

Agreed. An acknowledgement at the very least would have been nice. Just a "image courtesy of The Acaeum" would have been so hard to write?

It's perfectly possible that they don't know where some of them come from as all content in the index is user-submitted.

RPG.net keeps a record of who has submitted what - pictures, new items, magazines, etc. In this case, the individual who has taken a number of images (as recently as weeks ago) is ShannonA who is an admin there. Here's a link to what they have added as a member of RPG.net:

So there is no question of who took the images and placed them on RPG.net.

Please note my use of the word 'some' for not knowing where they came from.

That said, this is my last post in this thread. As a poster on both sites, I'm staying out of it.

No worries. I have cooled off a bit now. I still think he is a jerk and someone who should know better. Not to mention that stealing the images from one index to add to your own index seems like a conflict of interest.

He has closed the thread I started there so you can't post about it anymore anyway.

I write a column for BGN. I don't have anything to do with their policies, nor do I even know what they are. I'm definitely not an admin there. That's W. Eric Martin.

(And I hardly think my interaction on gaming communities is excessive. I write about RPGs on RPGnet and board games on BGN.)

In any case, I've pointed out the image usage to the admins at Acaeum via email. We'll either get the OK to use them with credit to the site or else we'll remove them.

I will quote from item #3.

This means you may not use these cover scans, or quote text from this site, without explicit written permission from The Acaeum webmaster...... (bold added by me)

What this means in case you don't understand, is that you seek and receive permission before you use the images. NOT after.

We've had about 200 people contribute to the RPGnet Gaming Index. It's a community project, much like The Acaeum, so be careful how you use the word you.

I've been notified of a problem, and I'm resolving it. The Acaeum is a great site for a lot of the ephemera of collecting that's beyond what the Index covers (or will cover) so I'm hopeful that we can take this situation and do something positive with it, by forging a connection between the sites and telling a lot more people about the cool stuff that's available here that's not at RPGnet.

Hey! I give him credit for communicating forthrightly when problems were pointed out. He's also apparently trying to make it right. Power to him.
