I activated the time machine (ie Model Retailer) again and I found myself at Gen Con 1984... Here are the photos.

Can anyone make out what the large text on the button says?

I guess the button says SPI and something smaller (perhaps a way to identify ex SPI employees?).

That's what I was thinking. (That it says SPI.)

Which might suggest that it is in fact Costikyan.

I'm not sure ... there's some other photos of him circa that era, including a long interview with Space Gamer, where he's got some crazy-ass huge hair. Not that he couldn't have gotten a haircut, of course ...

I'm also unsure about the proposed Steve Jackson sighting. I look at the photo once and I think it's him ... I look at it again and I say, "no way."

I've met both men, but, in each case, my most recent meeting was years ago. It could be that my mental picture of them is inaccurate and that they are, in fact, present in those photos.

That might be one of those "SPI died for my sins" buttons that were popular at the time.

Perhaps he was forced to cut some hairs by West End, for the convention at least, to give the company a better image, a more polished "I'm a professional" look. I have nothing against long hairs, but booths with shabby people don't impress me in a favourable way
