Does anybody remember this survey posted on the usenet group rec.games.frp.dnd about ten years ago? I wonder what became of the study- was this [obviously] student work ever published? Above all, what's meant by the phrase "If gender differs from sex, please indicate gender?"

Hello,

THANK YOU so much for agreeing to participate!

Here is the first part of the survey. The other two parts will follow
separately.

You ought to do this without
thinking too hard about any one response, and without discussing your
answers with anyone else.

These questionaires take about 2 hours to complete, can be done over
the computer, and emailed back to me at the following address:

         pcross@ccs.carleton.ca

Or, if you download the questionnaires and print them up, they can be
mailed back to me at:

         Patricia Cross
         Psychology Department
         Carleton University
         Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
         K1S 5B6

Let me again stress that your responses are completely confidential and will
only be used for research purposes. Your name,
email address, and any other identifying information will be kept in
strictest confidence and will NOT be shared with anyone else. Carleton
University's Psychology Department has a strict and binding code of
ethics which protect your rights as a research participant
and which require that confidentiality be protected and maintained
at all times.

NOTE: you must be 19 years of age or older to participate in this
study.

Before you begin:

Please indicate which of the below categories apply to you:

         ___       I participate in on-line sadomasochistic sex

         ___       I participate in real-life sadomasoschistic sex

         ___       I am a dominant/sadist/Top

practices, either in real life, or via Internet
                   facilities

Thank you very much for your careful attention to the items which follow.

Sincerely,

Patricia A. Cross, M.A.   (pcross@ccs.carleton.ca)

EXAMPLE:

i.        In general, dogs are more affectionate than cats.

         ANSWER: 3

This answer indicates that the individual takes a neutral stance
towards this issue.

____________________________________________________________________

1.        In general, women are less trustworthy than men.

ANSWER (please indicate a number between 1 and 5):

2.        Women are more willing than men to be sneaky or underhanded
in order to get what they want.

3.        Lots of attractive women flirt and use their looks in order
         to get ahead.

4.        A lot of women would probably be willing to sleep with their
boss in order to get a promotion.

5.        The old saying "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned"
         contains an important psychological truth.

6.        Even though they may appear sweet on the surface, women are
often more spiteful and vengeful than men.

7.        Women often use tears as a tool to make men feel sympathetic
towards them, and give them what they want.

8.        In a job or professional situation, women often have an
advantage over equally competent men, because women can
use flirting and sex as well as competence to get ahead,
         while me have only competence.

9.        If they could get away with it, a lot of women college
students who were doing badly in a course would have
sex with the professor in order to get a better
         grade.

10.       If they thought it would work for them, a lot of women
would lie about using birth control in order to get
pregnant and pressure their boyfriend into marrying them.

11.       Ideally, a woman should be a virgin when she marries.

12.       Ideally, a woman should be less sexually experienced
         than the man she marries.

13.       It is more important for women to be sexually faithful
in a relationship than it is for men.

14.       When it comes to a choice between career advancement
and the needs of the children, wives should be more willing
than husbands to make career sacrifices.

15.       Women who cheat on their husbands or boyfriends are likely
to claim that they were raped if they think it will get
         them off the hook.

16.       Because women are physically weaker than men, it's
important that they have a man around who can
         protect them.

17.       Most women enjoy traditional displays of politeness like
having doors opened for them, and pulling out thei chair
         when they sit down.

18.       Basically, it's no big deal if a man has casual sex
with someone other than his wife, as long as he does
his best to protect his wife's feelings by not letting
         her find out.

19.       A lot of so-called "date rape" involves women who consented
to sex but later cried rape to protect their reputations.

20.       Casual sex before marriage is more acceptable for men than
         for women.

21.       I can see how a woman might have sex before marriage with a
guy she really cares about, but a woman who has sex with
guys she doesn't know well because she finds them physically
         attractive, is a slut.

22.       Sometimes women play the role of a sweet, naive, innocent
just to hook men int giving them what they want.

23.       Women often play hard to get sexually in order to protect
their reputation, even when they secretly feel aroused.

24.       Frequently women want sex but won't admit it because they
don't want the guy to think that they are cheap or easy.

25.       A lot of women are willing to hide their true beliefs
and play whatever role they think will work in order
to catch an attractive guy with money and a good job.

26.       It is a man's duty to protect and defend the honour of
         the woman he cares about.

27.       The worst thing a woman can do to a man is cheat on
         him sexually.

28.       A lot of women flirt with other men in order to let
their boyfriend know that he had better give them
whatever they want or they will leave him.

29.       The worst thing a man can do is not defend the reputation
         of the woman he loves.

30.       Although men and women may be equal in many ways, women
feel safe and secure knowing they have a man around
who can look after them and protect them.

31.       Probably a lot of so called rape involves women who
are trying to get back at a guy who they voluntarily
had sex with but who didn't want to see them again.

32.       A good woman is like a rare gem. A man who is lucky
enough to find one should treasure and protect her.

If she graduated in Canada, her thesis is probably in the National Library and Archive where all theses go.

Patricia Ann Cross (born in 1966) has 2 entries:

Master's Thesis 1993: A social psychological investigation of UFO sighters

PhD Thesis 2000:  Understanding sadomasochism: an examination of current perspectives

I guess the D&D research didn't pan out or it got superclassified into sadomasochism.

Thanks for the info. Don't know if I'll ever see this thesis [there might be only a couple of copies in existence] but it wouldn't surprise me if it was part of an S&M study. Some of the questions are just a little too weird otherwise. It looked pretty bizarre when it appeared.

Here's the link to where you can download the S&M thesis:

http://amicus.collectionscanada.ca/s4-b ... &rp=1&vo=1

Most Master and PhD programs automatically submit the theses to the National Library where they get microfilmed and put online.  Heck my Master's thesis is online there too although it is probably pretty dry compared to the S&M one but also limited to a few copies.

Here is the RPG relevant part:

In Study 2 the sexual
                  proclivities of virtual sadomasochists
(n = 10) were compared with those of
                  real-life sadomasochists (n = 10),
                  non-s/m fantasy role-players (n = 10),
                  and non-s/m non-role-players (n = 10).
                  Cluster analyses indicated that the
                  virtual and real-life sadomasochists'
                  sexual proclivities were similar, as
were those of the non-s/m fantasy
                  role-players and non-role-players,
                  suggesting that the virtual
                  sadomasochists can reasonably be
expected to be like those of real-life
sadomasochists in terms of their sexual
                  tastes. Findings also indicated that
                  sadomasochists do differ from fantasy
                  role-players, indicating that s/m cannot
be explained as simply one variant of
                  fantasy role-playing.

So we do differ from sadomasochists!  Alright!

"Sex" indicates physical anatomy, whereas "gender" is an ambiguous sociological term that may indicate orientation, preference, identity, gender, etc.

In the case of transvestites, to use an obvious example, gender does not necessarily equate to sex.

(To be honest, I had to look that up as I usually get the definitions backwards.)

After reading the quote that Mike clipped out, I think you are right.  I guess she just did a newgroup search for "fantasy role playing" and didn't bother to read any of the content.
