No. It was a painting of a really hard to find sculpted figure. Sometimes they pop up on eBay.
This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Truthfully, I think that there is a real story to it, but I cant remeber exactly what it is. For some reason, I think that it relates to something that happened in the early days in
EGG
's Castle Greyhawk, but I am not 100% sure if thats it or not.

FWIW
, I'm not aware of any specific adventures tied to any of the
1e
cover paintings (well, other than the
DMG
cover adventure elements Rob wrote up for his ERKME newsletter in homage to DCSIII).

Howdy All,
There is no story or actual game connection. (L3 has such a room but that is after the painting's completion)
I do know that the adventurers are supposed to be self portraits of Dave Trampier at different points in his life, except the one wizard dude - that is supposed to be Gygax. That is from Gary Gygax and confirmed by DCS III. Also, that is DAT and his girlfriend peering around the edge of the
DM
screen!

I've read on the current
WOTC
website that someone has linked the statue to a representation of Orcus.
You should check the article on the evolution of PH here:

I've always wanted to know who the idol is supposed to be. Doesn't quite match Orcus as described in trhe
MM
, especially as there are no wings.
Still it's as good as anything else I have heard.

FWIW
, that idol was made into a demon in HackMaster, specifically, the Type XI Demon, known as Pagnyr'Parkus. 18 HD, 120 HP, HackFactor 119 (about equal to an Adult Red Dragon in power, or thereabouts). Pretty cool, actually.

I asked Gary himself, and like an idiot, I said the wrong artist name.
At any rate, he gave an informative answer.
