1st print DM Screen: How Rare?

Bazul's been asking about first print items and I knew he was bound to sooner or later ask about this one: 1st print DM Screen. Whats everyones opinion on rarity?  I believe its hard to get. You don't see many for sale at all. I see more 1st print MM and PHB than the 1st print DM screen. I wonder if the 1st print DM Screen had a very short print run or something? Perhaps someone can fill me in on that. I actually find the DM Screen very appealing since it has no cover art! :D   Lets hear what all of you have to say.

Mkman,  Thanks for thinking of me!   :wink:   No, the DM screens aren't really a pressing issue with me, but I do like the older screens better than the later runs. I agree, the first print runs seem to be rather scarce -- at least as uncommon as any of the first print hardback books.   For what it's worth, there is a first print DM Screen on ebay right now; currently the bidding is around $16. I think there are still a couple of days left on that auction. It will be interesting to see where it ends.  Cheers,  -Bazul  8)

Hi Bazul, I really don't think the DM Screen on ebay will hit that high. I would be surprised if the price went over 40. 1st print DM Screens never seem to attract much attention except from some collectors so I don't think we will start seeing them hit high prices that the 1st print monster manual fetches.

Agreed.  The one listed does appear to be in near-mint condition, but yeah I'd guess it will fetch somewhere in the $30-$40 range.... who knows?   cheers,  -Bazul

Bazul, near mint condition? Are you kidding me? Read his description, the item is nowhere at near mint condition. Their is a small hole in the item as well as well as some minor wear......  I sure hope popularity arises for the DM Screen! It kind of sucks to see rare items like that go for low prices.

Hey Bazul, low price for the DM Screen  :cry: . I had hoped popularity might pick up for the item and the price of it going higher, guess most collectors aren't really too interested in it. PERHAPS SOMEDAY!  Did you ever see one when you started playing D&D? I'm thinking it had a very short and abrupt print run and then tsr made the 2nd print.

Mkman,   I don't remember ever seeing the "first print" DM Screen as a newbie gamer back in 1979/80..   Yeah, I would have liked to see that screen sell for more as well!   -Bazul

I actually thought that was a good price for an item that is pretty beat up,  I have a first print still in shrink.  Now I wonder what that would go for.  (Not that I would ever part with it, mind you) :D

Ahh quit your bragging Len :-) I'd say a sw one would sell for about 60+.  The condition of the item wasn't beat up, it looked to be in fairly good shape. However everyones grading is different so I don't know what your meaning of beat up is.
