Is the value of the 1st edition 1st print monster manual affected by the presence or absence of an errata sheet? I was just curious I picked up a 1st edition 1st print no errata. And noticed that on eBay people are asking insane prices for the ones with errata sheets.

And if you don't have an errata sheet does that mean its not a 1st print?

From our web page:

"An "errata sheet" was available for the First print; unknown where these sheets came from (since the books were not shrinkwrapped, it is highly unlikely they came with the book purchase).  Most of the errata mentioned on the sheet were corrected with the Second print, so we surmise it was released sometime between Dec 1977 and May 1978.  More info is needed."

So no, they didn't originally come with the hardback (they would have fallen out).  A presence of one could inflate the value, yes, but as it would be very easy to counterfeit, take extreme caution.

Interesting. And thank you for the information. Have you ever seen an errata sheet available? I want one (original one).

The errata sheets rarely come up for sale by themselves.  Many of them were tossed or lost over the years.  When they do come up, they sell for a considerable amount.  Most of the ones that survived were inserted into the pages of a Monster Manual or taped/stapled to the front or back of the book.

From a discussion elsewhere, to high end collectors, the impression was that a NM errata sheet could take an excellent shape 1st print MM from a $600-$800 book to a $2000+ book so it could be worth $1000+.  And after "experts" saying the only way for it to sell for it's full potential is to put it in an open auction (rather than a Buy-it-now), it ended up selling for $632 (I believe this one also had some provenance of being from Ernie Gygax and was well advertised).

I would agree with the second part of what Mars wrote, namely that MM errata sheets sell for around $500 give or take. I think I have 6 1st print MM's and four of them have errata sheets.

Stratochamp's count of 1st print MM's with errata sheets is the exception, not the norm, much like most of his collection. :)

Okay, there at least two exceptions to the norm. :)

[lol] .. sorry, I couldn't help myself :)

Actually, I am going to sell one. Would people here advise selling the errata with the Monster Manual or separately? (my general preference is usually for 7-day ebay auction listing, but happy to be persuaded otherwise)

I'd personally like it sold separately (I'd like to pick one up), but combined might actually result in a higher sales price for both.

I am a yellow belt in printing. I know just enough to be dangerous to myself and others, so I may be wrong; but though it would be easy to counterfeit these for ebay photos, it would be a challenge to print these as they were in the 1970s. Toner stands out under 20x. It's all splotchy with rough edges. It would take some work to set up a press that produces the same result. Right?

I haven't been involved in the desktop publishing world for a time now. The digital presses were just coming in then (2008). Those I had familiarity with actually printed the ink on top of specially treated paper, and could be quite sharp. Don't know how they have progressed since then.

Now if someone were to go to a place like Staples or FedEx Office and use a copier, or even a home printer using old-style toner, then I would think it possible to get ragged edged text. Some higher end printers can get very high on the DPI (dots per inch), and can look sharp. Depends on what they have. My last trip to a FEOffice ended up with rough edges, though that could be due to the PDF file I was printing not being set for text to be 100% black and white, and rather a grayscale. I can see it possible to do that on a copier or desktop printer. I don't think it would be worth it to use an actual printing press. It would be a money loser.

Old paper, like standard copier paper that they probably would have used, could also get discolored over the decades from the acidity. So, I wouldn't think you would get too many pristine white sheets. Maybe those with copies can chime in on that aspect.

The pair sold for $1591.13     I made you an extra $442.61.    You're welcome  :-)

I have two, one with the errata sheet, one without.  So 50/50 for me I guess.

Sorry if I raise a question about timing, but how is it possible to have 1st MM with errata if "Errata for the early prints of the Monster Manual, first released in Jun 1978" (quoted from the Acaeum page) and 1st print was distributed bewteen Dec.77 and May 78?
Any 1st MM would not have had that sheet included only if Marty McFly decided to help EGG with his car...
I do understand about the value of the errata aa a stand alone item, I don't understand why it should increase the value of a book which cannot have it due to the timing of its publication... it could increase also the value of a DM Guide if I decide to throw one of them in the book...
Is there anything I miss or my logic is applied correctly (and still I don get the point)?

I'm not entirely sure, but it follows how the woodgrains were done.  I highly doubt the first copies sold had the correction sheet in there.  My second print woodgrain does.  I have seen some first print woodgrains have the correction/errata sheet included in auctions over the years.  In terms of the Monster Manual, my guess is not all inventory of the first print were sold when the data for corrections was assembled and I'm assuming here that TSR added the loose page for the remaining stock before the second printing came out.  When they did and where it sold was another matter.  However I do think the errata/correction sheet came early.  I have a first print of Unearthed Arcana for example and it was quite quickly after its release Dragon magazine had an errata sheet for that book.  In terms of increasing value, I think it boils down to as collectors who wants rare ephemera that was corrected in later printing.  It's a curiosity piece that TSR published for a small time window before stuff got corrected in later printings so I think that alongside the first printing of the Monster Manual itself makes the value rise.  As I said above, I have two, one with and one without.  Curiously the one without it has more wear and tear (not bad shape, but definitely used) whereas the copy I have with the errata sheet looks new as in hasn't been used.
