Yes, the woodgrain box is identical, but as you mentioned, the grain is longitudinal (vertical) to the height of the box.  It's possible there were some that were horizontal, but I haven't seen any.  My copy is vertical.  Perhaps someone else has seen a horizontal version?

The woodgrain D&D boxed sets had different grain orientation, depending on the printing.  If you haven't seen details on this, you can find them here:

The woodgrain boxes were hand-assembled by EGG and friends, family, and colleagues.  Not sure if there are any details on how the TSR woodgrain Tractics boxed set was assembled, but it was likely this same process.  The boxes might have even been pulled from the same inventory.  It would be interesting to know, if this was the case.

As far as the printings, the first print boxed set was a black box published by Guidon Games. The Fast Rules booklet was apparently published before the boxed set.  The Fast Rules was a simplified version of Tractics.  I believe there were three printings of the Fast Rules.  From what I've gathered, there were two printings of the TSR Tractics woodgrain boxed set.  The 3rd TSR printing was like the white D&D box sets.  All of the Tractics print runs were very limited, perhaps a few thousand for each printing.
