Hello,

Quick inquiry here.

Was just curious about the spine creases underneath shrink wrap.

Am I wrong in assuming that spine creases are typically caused by bending or folding the module vertically (top to bottom or vice versa)?
Does it take much for these creases to occur?

I suppose I could just simply ask:  How do spine creases happen on modules, especially under the shrink wrap?

This is coming from an innate suspicion I have with spine creases under shrink wrap and their validity of being in the original shrink.
Maybe I am wrong.
There are a few modules for sale right now on ebay from the same seller that all have creases under the shrink wrap, as well as
having price tags that almost look new; and these price tags are all in exactly the same condition; even though they are almost 40 years old.
Usually the ink has faded somewhat over time, but none of the 3 show any signs of this.
So the price tag condition as well as all 3 modules having creases under the shrink wrap has brought me here to gather some opinions - SPECIFICALLY regarding the spine creases.

Thanks for any/all responses/prior links, and Happy New Year to all.

Is it possible to get creases horizontally in shrink, but you really have to work at it, and multiple ones are suspect. I'll pull out my shrinked OB3 and do some testing.
The shrink itself is usually very specific for certain modules. If you get some pics of it and post them here, we have several shrinky-dinks who are expert at telling original shrink and I'm sure they'd be happy to help. If the seller hesitates, it likely means it is a homemade job.
I know the air hole or whatever that little missing circle is on shrinked modules is a big indicator. And I would think a module that has been subject to bending would tend to have torn shrink at the corners.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

Lol. You better not.  :D

Some modules are more susceptible to creases than others. The X2 module comes to mind.  Improper storage is what usually does it with items still in original wrap.  It doesn't take much of a bend for creases to start becoming visible. I agree with Deadlord, post some pics or auctions and we can discuss them.

Generally the older items are wrapped from top to bottom with a distinct overlap that can be seen on the back, with the left and right sides being sealed.  The wrap tends to be PVC which is more crinkly and less elastic.  PVC tends not to warp an item if too tight and will exhibit breaks or tears at the corners.  However, I have seen some really tight PVC that causes a ripple effect on the item.  Nowadays, everything is centerfold Polyolefin wrapped where the item is placed into what is essentially a sleeve and enclosed on two sides.  Sometimes the wrapping may be bigger than the item both in height and width and a machine will size it down where you can see seals on three sides.  Polyolefin is much more elastic and tends to be softer to the touch.  Like Deadlord mentioned above, breathing holes should be present.  They tend to be spaced evenly and show up on both sides of the item.

I had time so figured I would post examples...

For the time period (early to mid 80s), I would expect PVC wrap with middle overlap on back.  These don't fit that criteria so I would pass.  At first glance, I thought they were in polypropylene bags. They look like they were possibly done a while ago based on the rubbing and ageing of the wrap, but it is not original in my opinion.  One can not be 100% certain without physically viewing them (to find scratches/wear under the plastic), but I say no.

With the price points being what they are on these auctions, I would expect something much higher in condition/quality.  Remember, these modules have probably switched hands numerous times and the seller can only go by what is in front of them and what they have been told.  I'm not slandering anyone, just giving an opinion.

Edit: A quick check, the ones I have are all PVC wrapped with overlap on back.

I agree with above points.  Does not look like original shrinkwrap, though the shrink does appear to have been done some time ago.  Original shrinkwrap from this period was often very tight, and as SKA mentioned, had that overlap on the back.  These copies also have a lot of creases on the spines, and I even saw a chip.  It's generally not possible to get so many creases without tearing the shrinkwrap.

Many retail stores back in the day would re-shrink returned or otherwise used stock.  My guess is that's what we're looking at here.
