I just got a near-mint N7 in the mail. I bought it because it looked perfect. It was well packaged according to my expectations, but not for what is needed to actually protect the module. It now has one nasty three-fold corner dent.

I know I am going to sound super whinny here.

I am buying modules to grade. I want to display a set of 9.0 or better. A set of A1-4 10.0s would be great. A 10.0 first print B2 would be amazing. Its never going to happen. By comic book/magazine standards my N7 is now a 8.0 at best. I've bought $3 comics that show up in comic specific boxes, bagged and boarded. $50 module? Home cut cardboard and a ziplock bag.

Oh well.

Edit: N4 - not Mass Effect Soldiers. Those who know will know.

So the item was damaged in transit?
If you had specific packing instructions, were those clearly conveyed to the person packing the item?
If you want something packed in oversized rigid cardboard for example, and then placed in a USPS box, you can convey that type of information to the seller. If you want something shipped in a specific product or packaging form you can also convey that to the seller.
Most people will go the extra mile to ensure something arrives in perfect condition especially when the buyer expresses concern and is willing to cover the shipping costs.
The seller has no idea what your intent is for the product or what your desires are regarding shipping preferences.
It's merely a $50 module, not a $1000 module, and he has no way of knowing that it requires anything other than standard cardboard stiffening.
It sounds like a simple communication error.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

All valid.

Maybe I'm just saying the comic book crowd will package a hot-off-the-press $6 comic like gold because its the industry expected standard, likely due to grading. Its the same for TCGs. A $50 40 year old module gets packaged like an average amazon order - suitable.

I have messaged packaging requests, particularly for box sets. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't help. Too often its estate sale/garage sale crowds who package to ship not preserve. Its not always expected for DnD items.

Its not like I dont want the module either. Its the best copy I have by far. Just no longer worth grading due to shipping.

Long term, I think there are more gradable modules out there today than there will be in five years - due to shipping.

Any Mass Effect 3 fans out there?

Any time I ever buy something valuable on eBay or another site, I always message the seller after I buy.

I ask them nicely if they can kindly pack the item well, to ensure it arrives in the same condition it is advertised as being. I throw in a story about a past bad experience and say that I want to be sure it doesn't happen again.

99.9% of the sellers who I message reply back to reassure me, and when I receive the packages, they're all packed well enough.

It never hurts to ask.

Is this the item?  Very nice if it is. Congrats.

I'm not sure from your description whether this is what happened to your package, but I used to receive a lot of mail folded to fit into my box. This produced all sorts of mangling to the 40-year-old cardboard of RPG covers. It was frustrating to realize that an item had survived so many years without damage, only to fall victim to my postal worker at the last minute before I got it. It only happened at a certain previous residence - where I live now, large items are left on my doorstep.

If it was just a corner only and packed in a large padded envelope, even with sawn off cardboard, it'll be more likely a sorting machine snaffu or a dink in the mailbag neing hurled from one van to another. You really have to pack well if you're gonna use padded envelopes, or use boxes. Those who used to buy from me back in the day may remember the rediculous amounts of packing and tape I used to use to keep things padded and rigid in transit. I can only assume a seller with no real experience and no interest in what he's selling (or what his customers expect when they are buying.)

Absolutely with Tszii that every time you buy something you should get it in the same condition as if they turned up at your door and picked it off the table yourself. But sometimed when its most important you have to remind the seller, be really anal about it, and offer them more money for their shipping efforts.

This is it. I think this may have been the way the module was before shipping btw. I just noticed the corner ding on the back of the module. It doesnt show on the front, which was the first thing I saw when I unpacked it.

The spine looks better in person than in the photos. Pages are super white. It was packaged suitably. Nothing like a $6 comic though.

One last note: I used to consider a large zip lock bag and cardboard on both sides great packaging. Heck, I mailed my R1 to Frank bagged and boarded in a postal mailer a couple of years ago. Thinking about grading and the standards has changed my perspective. I dont let my things own me, I am just trying to figure out how to a 10.0 B2!

You likely know this, but bends/wrinkles/creases can often be pressed out, with proper care.  If you are good at it, you can typically reverse bend a corner like that, and it will be barely perceptible.

Is that what would be called a 'stealth tax' on the buyer?

While a box is better it is no guarantee. I think people fail to realize the amount of packages that are processed in a sorting facility. That boxes weighing 50# or more are being dropped out of containers with envelopes in them as well.

I've packaged items that I thought could withstand a cinder block falling on it but didn't.

Caveat emptor - It's the buyer's responsibility to ensure that he fully understands whether or not the seller meets with his expectations.

That last picture you posted is crazy. It’s a wonder mail finds its way to a destination at all.

Bagging, boarding and these specific boxes, provides the best chance to avoid damage in the mail, and it could still happen. (Its like a box within a box) Anything less has a fair chance of a small crease or corner ding that would result in a 9.2 or lower.

https://www.amazon.com/BCW-Comic-Book-M ... 145&sr=8-8

Keep in mind, most new comics, fresh out of the box in the store, are 9.2-9.6. Its hard to even find a flaw with many 9.8. You really have to search for the flaw, and sometimes cant even find it without help.

Again, i didnt mind small dings before. At all. No staple rust, page browning, writing, module wasnt used as a clipboard, just a few spine creases? Great!

Amazon.com : BCW Comic Book Mailer for Comics - Magazines - Books (1 ct.) : Office Products

I've use the Gemini Mailers with spacers on pricier comics. But they are expensive. Had two arrive damaged last week. It's a crap shoot
