Cringe reading at some spots but I wanted people to know about it.  Some points i agree with and it seems fair to a point.  I'm not sure how exactly I got to the article.  I launched Chrome and it was a story that was in the links below the search bar.  Scary stuff if Google is trying to 'steer' people's reading habits. Anyways here is the link.  My take on it is without capitalism the TTRPG industry as a whole doesn't get off the ground and it would have died a lonely death at 330 Center Street.

Dungeons & Dragons Is a Case Study in How Capitalism Kills Art

That's because you haven't yet had a chance to experience TTRPG re-education camps firsthand. There you will learn vocational skills to increase job opportunities, combat terrorism, & reduce poverty. You will also learn that the Dungeon Master controls the means of production within the game world, all with the assistance of NPCs, rich peasants, merchants who charge more than the prices listed in the Players Handbook, & various other parasites. A TTRPG should be a party, & so the interests of the party are the interests of us all. Otherwise it's just a TT&ARPG, which is adults only.

It looks like Google is steering you to an article on a topic it knows you have an interest in with a clickbait title.

By its very nature RPGs run contrary to socialism.
They are games that encourage sharing and enjoyment, discussion and the resolution of conflicts.
Whereas socialism is about control, domination, and the extinction of all thought and feeling - A reduction to the lowest common level of misery and depravation. Everyone is a winner - Just look at all the healthy happy people in any socialist city.

It is probably true that without free will, and the ability to choose what one does with the fruits of ones own labour, and in ones own free time, TTRPGs would not exist.

In any system where people are allowed to think without fear, you will always end up with people with imaginations.
Unfortunately, you will always end up those who hate people who can imagine and are willing to think for themselves, too. So you have to put up with them.

Loved the article, and very spot on. Will get to your book soon!

It's a well-written opinion/slant.  I agree that the article makes some good points, and the author is complimentary of Jon's book.  I wonder how the author prefers his socialism as there are very successful countries with socialism and very unsuccessful countries with socialism (don't answer this question, it's rhetorical).   :?

The article is kind of amusing. Of course everything is perfect in the author's socialist utopia! And the people nodding their head in agreement that something is wrong with D&D probably also think they would agree on how to fix it.

I just finished Jon's book yesterday and I enjoyed it a lot. The Blumes were an interesting case study on how having family members working at the company clouds judgement. To be honest, it had not previously been clear to me why nepotism can be a bad thing.

Besides any comment on the article here: if i understood correclty, this book covers the history from the  creation of the game up to the "destruction" of TSR whereas the Playing at the world is the story of the early days, from the wargames era up to the creation of the game... Therefore this should be considered the sequel of the first one with a common part which is the early days of TSR... Is it correct?
Now, the second question: what is the exact content of The elusive shift instead?
Thanks and ciaooo

Um, I guess I'd say

Playing at the World: History of system designs and influences that led to the creation of D&D, and the recognition that it was a new genre of game (up to like 1977)
Elusive Shift: Almost a direct sequel to PatW; a history of early RPG theory as people grappled with what it meant for RPGs to be a new genre of game (up to like 1981)
Game Wizards: Business history of TSR, not about system design, but instead about corporate and legal factors that framed the business of producing D&D (up to 1985)

GW isn't really a sequel to anything, it looks at D&D through a different lens than PatW. Sort of the same way Art & Arcana looks at the whole history of the D&D brand through the lens of art and visuals.

The whole analogy seems a little one-dimensional. Wouldn't this question be better addressed with the wisdom of Gygax's alignment grid?

I also just finished Jon’s book and thoroughly enjoyed it.  It is amazing to have insight into what was going on behind the scenes at the time various products were released and how those events found their way into some of the products.  Understanding the size and scale of the company at those various times is also interesting and helps explain both the quality and quantities of products released.  Fascinating stuff, especially when paired with some of the other recent histories and biographies released over the past five to ten years. Jon is truly a gift to the TTRPG community.

" Scary stuff if Google is trying to 'steer' people's reading habits."

Of course they are.  Every minute of every day.  Big Tech is strongly allied with, shall we say, a certain political viewpoint and they are heavily invested in promoting that ideology non stop....and also shadow banning, blocking or outright censoring any others.  Especially any that directly disagree with it.

Social engineering is the air they breathe every second.

I thought this was a pretty well known fact by now.

The pendulum will swing back.  You are starting to see it now.  The real question is will it swing back to equilibrium or not.  People are extremely upset with what they are living through and being exposed to from media, big tech, and over reaching governments.  We live in interesting times indeed.  Hoping it doesn't lead to civil war.  Its not just in the US, Europe is a mess, far east is a mess, Australia is essentially a chapter from Orwell's 1984 book.  Ugh.

If it does, we will be the best equipped to deal with it, since we have the skills to figure out what will happen with miniatures, graph paper, & dice.

The funny thing is this is all predictable and no-one gives a F.
We get the leaders and the future we deserve.

I used to believe that.  Bread lines are going to suck.
