I never require signature for delivery because of the value of something I sell.  If I am shipping with eBay, tracking is supposedly good enough to protect me(according to eBay's policies).  I also always use Priority Mail when shipping valuable (over $100) items since those shipments are automatically  insured.  If an item is over $500.00, I usually purchase insurance.  I have found that Priority Mail packages suffer less damage, probably because they are in the system for less time (among other things).  If I am not shipping with eBay, I still don't use signature confirmation as it legally doesn't help me much and the money is better spent on insurance coverage.  The bottom line is I don't want to lose a lot of money.  

I can only say... Don't ever use DHL.

Several actually.  Along with other higher ticket items.  USPS Priority Mail with additional insurance and signature confirmation.

You are correct.  It is a hassle.  I've only gone through the process once.  It wasn't comfortable, but it worked in the end.  However, I find that insured packages almost never get lost or damaged.  I also find that alerting buyers about the insurance status of their package results in shipments not being reported lost or damaged.  I'll update buyers by assuring them that "their package should arrive safely and that if their are any problems to just let me know so I can alert the postal authorities and make a claim."  There's no threat there.  It's worked well for me over many years.
