It is official, no auction this year.  

I am also hearing the vendor hall will be a ticketed event to limit the amount of people in the vendor hall at least for the 1st hours of the day.

A while back I proposed a video feed of auctioned items.

You mark a specific spot on the stage table, mount a fixed cam, and get used to putting everything there.

You put the feed out to various TVs plugged into the system (it's a convention center, easy; GenCon would own the TVs) and via web. You enable bidding from cellphones.

But no, that was too difficult for the 21st century.

They should have just required everyone at Gencon to be vaccinated...

That would remove the social distancing crap, masks, and other needless things to be done.

I'm passing on Gencon this year because of the pandemic-version of a convention (and rolling my credit over to next year).

Also, many companies not making a presence this year was also a factor.

With lots of things, never. Assuming society quickly returns to pre-pandemic distancing & general masklessness, events where people gather will happen in ways that are different than before. The differences will sometimes be impossible to predict, & will exist for reasons not always immediately apparent until you make some gross faux pas which identifies you as a humanoid creature of the old world.

Unfortunately, this is Indiana(North Mississippi). I heard a report that a week ago we are only 33% vaccinated and most likely will only max out at around 50%. Too many crazy idiots live here. I work as am electrician and most people I work with are anti vaccine and masks.  


BTW: I want to get back to a "normal world" so my brother and I have been vaccinated.

I have a feeling you saying "the rest of the world is open" was meant as hyperbole. I wouldn't want to be in a number of countries right now, especially the ones with under 10% of their population vaccinated.
I want Gen Con to be awesome and everything as epic as it was in 2019. I love the Gen Con auction. That said, the con only got pushed back about 6 weeks from its usual date. Most Gen Con planning takes place prior to January of the year it is held. They don't whip up the whole schedule of events 3 or 4 months before the date. Looking back at January, the whole pandemic situation was hard to truly predict. Gen Con couldn't take the risk of planning a full blown convention in the usual time frame it does. It has a lot of moving parts. As such, they probably took a middle of the road, somewhat risk averse approach to what they thought they could hold with a much scaled back amount of space.

I'm happy that enough of my team are vaccinated and that we will have a booth and numerous RPG sessions at Gen Con this year. I hope we break even. Stop by booth 510 and let us know what your take on the con is.

I work in physical commodity trading and have people who work for me/us in numerous places that are, for lack of a better words, completely fucked.

India, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa - to name a few.

China is just re-entering lockdown in a bunch of cities due to vaccine escape as sinovax seems ineffective against the Delta variant.

I understand the risk to people is not large right now in the US & UK (and some other rich 1st world countries) but it is a valid goal to get more (mostly young) people vaccinated to stop variants popping up (which happens if theres more background circulation).  

Obviously, as someone who is relatively young (late 30s counts right?) and have young children the impact on them developmentally has been horrid and should be recognised by oldies - the price being paid is incredible. Especially by those aged 60+ who rode the post WW2 economic boom and now the young are paying for their vulnerability - and will walk into a life of high housing costs and crappy wages.

So I'm kind of on the fence. Here, in London, at least we can go to museums now and that has been wonderful!
