Over at the Mystara forum at The Piazza, Lost Woodrake asked about Alternative GAZ Covers.

Someone posted a couple of examples. He is talking about concept art covers made before the products were finished. Some of the pictures seem to be pretty low quality black and white thumbnails, but there was also a colour advert from a Dragon Magazine 121.

I've seen one of these things for a Spelljammer product (Practical Planetology) in the past. It was some sort of booklet with a list of upcoming titles. (I was also really happy a few years back to see the pre-production covers of the never-published Wildspace novels.)

I looked around The Acaeum Library, but didn't spot an article about these. I've also tried RPG Geek, in case some folks put alternative covers up there, but it seems like their community is not collating these sort of things.

Is there anyone here documenting promotional material, who has a list of where these alternative covers can be found?

I was thinking that boxed sets might be a good place to look, but I've heard that TSR was sending out promotional material to gaming stores.

These mockup pieces commonly appeared in TSR’s annual catalogs. For the most part you can still pick up the catalogs for a relatively low cost on eBay.

Cheers,
