Best way to store box sets?

Have acquired a couple of Basic D&D sets and wondering which way to store them.

Flat (with the bottom down) seems like it would be best for the contents (book, modules and TSR mailing bits).

Sideways seems like it would be best for the box to avoid gravity slowly causing the cover to cave in.

Was considering doing a bit of both. Book and module in a poly bag stored in the box, and stand the boxes up. Maybe with an archival friendly bit of filler to keep the books upright in the box.

What is the best practice?

Most collections I've seen have them standing up on end.

I've thought about removing the contents and cutting something rigid like styrofoam to the exact dimensions of the inside of the box. That will allow me to train the box back into the correct shape if it's already starting to dish and I can stack them pretty much any way that I want. Almost all of my boxes are for minis and I already do not store them in box though.
