I am curious to get thoughts from those of you that have purchased high bid items on Ebay (5K+ dollar value) items or even in the cases some of these 10K wood grain/brown box's are going for.

1. Do you typically ask the seller to add insurance for the bid amount?
2. If you have taken additional insurance, has anyone ever had something not show up, or damaged badly that you had to force a claim against that insurance? Do they just pay up the amount you insured for? Seems like a collectible item may be more difficult to get the insurance company to pay the full amount if you had to make a claim.

Anyone had experience or thoughts on this when dealing with high dollar item purchases over ebay and insurance?

This has been tricky for me in the past, and the complexity hinges heavily on whether or not you're receiving an international or domestically shipped package.  For international shipping - I've hired a customs broker to handle taxes, fees, and insurance.  This has been expensive, but part of the cost is having a relatively worry-free process.  As luck would have it, I just called UPS about domestic insurance on purchases of $7k USD or more, and they directed me to the UPS Capital website - I believe I'll be pursuing this option.  One important thing to note - standard USPS/FedEx/UPS declared value coverage has a very low cap and some nuances which make it fairly useless for these types of purchases (in my opinion).

If it's very expensive, I would make arrangements with the seller to have the items shipped UPS or Fedex. I think what Skull said is right that USPS doesn't have as high insurance on items as would the other companies.
I have had a couple things come in damaged in the past. off the top of my head, one was a piece of art (from the original artist ... which was bewildering) who did an absolutely terrible job of "packing", if you could call it that. The price went low, so I didn't bother with any insurance. The other damaged packages I went through Paypal or Ebay and just mailed the items back when directed to.

If something's that badly damaged, I would consider just getting your money back from Paypal, etc.
edit: I think the seller might be obligated to get insurance for the final bid amount though (???) or it would behoove the seller to do that since, if something happens during transit the seller would want to have the ability to get his money back.

USPS will insure up to $50,000 via registered mail if I recall correctly

I would have no problem requesting Next Day Air when it comes to a large $$ purchase.

Any Ebay seller is responsible for the item until it gets into your hands or you can return it as damaged.  A lot of these sellers think they don't have to get insurance if the buyer doesn't pay for it and they are dead wrong and ripe for a rude awakening. Drives me nuts when I see the seller post in his description that you have to pay extra for insurance. That said, obviously as a buyer you prefer the item, so I always make sure the seller insures it. Sometimes I have to kindly remind him of his responsibility :)
