I have a copy of this boxed set where the box ends are joined. Kinda works nice as it creates a pocket for the booklets. I've never seen a box set like this. Is this a printing error where they weren't properly detached or were some copies made like this?

Looks like an issue with the box top being stuck to the bottom of the box.   The folded portion is supposed to be in the box top.  You might be able to remove the top from the bottom, if you are careful.  It looks like they put the adhesive on the wrong side of the flap that is stuck to the box bottom.

This is a defect during the production run.
