I respectfully disagree... the Conan, Starfinder and RuneQuest items will likely be good.

That said, I won't be able to get them - there isn't a FLGS for miles...

I believe those refer to the level of materiel support from the manufacturers.  The Platinum level supporters provided fifteen of each item to be given away free at each location, gold provided ten of each item, etc...  

A reminder to those I chatted with in earlier posts on this thread... any help with the acquisition of 3-4 items (Conan, RuneQuest, StarFinder, LotFP) would be spectacular!  May even garner a special "reward" from me!

Oh, don't worry.  I'm going.  I go every year that I can, which is most years.

I can't resist the call of free swag.  Even if it's crappy free swag.  

But honestly, I've snagged some really cool items on FRPGD.

So, I went to my FLGS, and the place had just opened for the day.  I think I was the second customer there.  I went to the owner, and he asked what he could do for me.  I told him that today was Free RPG Day.  He said, "Is that today?"      My hopes for this being a good day just plummeted.   He then told me he had no idea where the stuff was because he knew he didn't sign for it.  My day was getting worse by the second.     So, he looks up the shipment on-line, sees that he has received it....somewhere... and notes that another employee signed for it.  I asked, "Is that employee coming in today?"  He says yes, and I ask when he's supposed to arrive.  He said, "About negative 60 minutes ago.  He should be here any minute."   Fifteen minutes later, said employee arrives and goes in the back to find the box(es).  He comes back out ten minutes after that with a stack of stuff in his hand, pictured below:  

I asked if I could have two of the items, and he said I could have it all.     My day suddenly got a LOT Better!  

Looking briefly over everything, The Runequest book is 48 pages, but it's half rulebook.  The DCC booklet is also 48 pages but is 38 pages of rulebook with two short adventures.  The Numenera booklet is 19 pages of adventure and the rest of the pages, 32 total are rules.  But the illustrations are color and beautiful.  This is a sleeper item just looking at it quickly.  The Timewatch/13th Age item is half rules and pregens but 48 pages long.  I was not that impressed.  The Borderhounds item is 12 pages long and the adventure inside is 2 1/2 pages long.  There are no illustrations inside.  The Familiars of Terra is about 30 pages long and looks worthless.  The Cthulhu item is a card with a web-site and access code on the back.  That's it.  I have not accessed the web-site with creepy sounds.  That's my super quick summary.  

I snagged RuneQuest, Torg Infinity, Starfinder: First Contact, two copies of the Conan quickstart, and the knockdown dice cup. Figure it would go nicely with my flat dice from last year, being that both are by the same company.

Anyway, I got the RuneQuest quickstart simply to see how much RuneQuest has changed from the second edition. Torg Infinity was because I hadn't been keeping up on the news. Starfinder: First Contact was a bust as it was simply monsters, not a quickstart like I expected. Conan I got because at this moment it's the only way to get a look at the 2d20 system prior to the release of Star Trek: Adventures. I need to find out if the system is truly as mediocre as some playtesters believe, and whether it can change my mind that forking over $60 for the Star Trek Adventures core rulebook is not worth it.

That said, I need to read up a bit more on these, but from appearances, they don't seem to require a lot of work to add basic rules for determining attributes. For RuneQuest however, it's not really needed since Chaosium still has the Basic Roleplaying quickstart available for free here.

Only three game stores in my area - two are primarily comics stores- so they participate in "free comic day" but not "Free RPG Day"

Gamer's Gambit in Danbury, CT did come through, though. Scored me the RuneQuest (4E) Quickstart rulebook and a Q-Workshop 8-sider.
