Stupid question maybe and my apologies if this has been asked before, but I did a search and didn't come up with anything. The question came up when a friend asked in conversation if I know the site, "the Ah-kay-em" and I'm like, no, never heard of it (because I pronounced it "A-c-um"), which he refused to believe. We soon realized the disconnect, but I'm still not sure 5 years later if either of us is correct.

So, neither of us was correct. Figures! Thanks!

I figured it would be pronounced like Latin: Ak-eye-um. For instance, Caesar is properly pronounced Kie-sar, where the first syllable sounds like the first syllable in "kite." The Germans got it basically right, so maybe we should ask them to pronounce Acaeum.

So now the world will never know. Probably for the best, since the true pronunciation of Acaeum is a magical command too powerful for mere dabblers to attempt.

An actual Latin pronunciation of the letter group "acaeum" would be "ak-eye-uum" (hard c, diphthong ae as long i ["eye"] and long u ["shoe"]), but even as someone who majored in Latin and taught high school Latin, it's popularized Latin pronunciation for me, "uh-see-um" (soft c, diphthong ae as long e, short u).

Of course, for Caesar, I also say See-zerr and not Kai-zar (with diphthong ai as long i ["eye"]). If you walk around saying Kai-zar outside of a Latin classroom, you a) confuse people and b) come across as a pompous ass.
