I have a business trip coming up this month, and I'm tacking on a couple days in London to have some fun.

Any recommendations for gaming / book / whatever stores to poke around in to try to find those great old UK gaming magazines and other neat bits?


Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

When Heather and I visited my sister studying in London in December 2006, I was able to visit The Fantasy Centre, which was a fabulous F&SF bookstore, but my understanding is that it closed since then.  We didn't find any other good F&SF bookstores in the metro area, but after visiting TFC, I didn't feel the need to look hard either.  (I picked up a copy of Tolkien's Pictures in slipcase there, some Clark Ashton Smith paperbacks, and a few Moorcock books I didn't have as well).  

That said, I didn't find any 1e-oriented RPG books in any of the gaming shops I visited, mostly just GW stuff.

I did get to meet several Acaeum members at a pub one evening, and to do a walking tour with red_bus, too, one morning :D

Wow, that shop is still around?  Nostalgia rush!  That's really great.

I still remember seeing their ads all the time in Dragon magazine back in the day.  Fond memories.

What a coincidence!  I am getting a little book shopping in between work calls today... I get to London about twice a year, and downtown has some of the coolest flgs and used book stores  around.

Wait, you did mean London, Ontario right?

Forbidden Planet - 179 Shaftesbury Ave

Very small gaming section, but massive comics / sci-fi / movie stuff (basement) and is just around the corner from Orcs Nest (which is tiny BTW) if you're heading there.

Neither deal in vintage / old-school or 2nd hand, although Orcs Drift might have a small box. Gosh Comics (near the British Museum - go in and look at the Lewis Chessmen and Sutton Hoo stuff if nothing else) is near by as well, which is good for small-press / indie comics.

You have the shop recommendations I see.  London is already looking pretty Christmas-ified so assuming that it is not grim weather (always a bet, though the long range forecast is not looking too bad) you will have a lovely time. I used to shop at Leisure Games in Finchley, which is very close to a Northern Line tube station.

I visited it during my holidays in London but any hopes for vintage treasures were quashed - only current stuff. Nonetheless, being a retailer myself and so identifying with the guy (and gal) behind the counter, I bought a couple of KODT books. Really hope to visit Leisure Games next time (assuming Brexit does not mean "you Europeans out for real!"
