Do you bother paying the prices that Noble Knight charges for their stuff? Everything I've seen that they have up for sale is at LEAST twice what it is worth. So... Question for the Hive Mind... Do you bother?

I ignore them. Even a modest amount of patience on eBay always yields whats I need at a much more reasonable price. If I don't think I can't find it there, I reach out directly to someone here.

I agree with this for the most part, but every now and then, Noble Knight gets their hands on something that's truly rare ... and since collectors typically feel the way we're describing in this thread, then the high static price is actually comparable to what the price could be driven up to on eBay (because collectors generally swarm away from NK).  So in this case, I would be open to Noble Knight ... however, for the average item, then NK is generally overpriced and you'd be better served waiting for an eBay auction (or check out Amazon and Abebooks).

Also, be super-careful of their presentation. They use stock pics for everything so that "good" price for a VF/NM item may look less reasonable when the actual condition is taken into account. Having said that, on occasion I too have seen something on NK that looks ok pricewise. Also I have heard they are usually pretty good at sending real pics when you ask and about taking offers on some items.

This is a good point.  Also, make sure you read the "description" text for the item you're interested in - particularly, if the item you're interested in is a box set.  Noble Knight makes it somewhat difficult to determine whether or not a box set is complete (and without pictures, you're stuck reading text-only like it's the year 1815).

My reason for posting this was that they seem to charge way above what even local shops would charge at retail, and higher even than what chains like Half-Price Books charges, so how are they staying in business? Econ 101 would suggest that if they are charging above what the demand is, they shouldn't be able to sustain it.

I have purchased quite a few items from NK over the last year and usually because they were the better price at the moment I was looking, or the better condition, or after factoring in shipping, was not any different and easier to get things from a single source.  But agree, some prices are just out line with reality.  Even for some rares I have managed to find them on Ebay or elsewhere for 1/3 what NK is asking, though I did recently acquire one for half what they have been going for on Ebay, so does not hurt to look and compare.

They will send photos if asked and I have found that they are pretty good with descriptions and conditions, though have had a couple of things arrive that were not what they were sold as, but in all those cases they either refunded money, or sent me another that was in good shape for no additional cost, or shipping and so far have not asked for the other item back either, so keep both (and sometimes it is a good usable item, just not collection worthy.)

I have about 6 sources I run items through when looking, but I can also get a bit impatient so will occasionally pay a bit more just to get something I am looking for that does not show up as often in other sources.

I place a couple orders a year, usually a large boxful of goodies.  Used items can vary but pricing in new stock is usually very good, and being able to combine shipping makes a big difference on international postage.

I know some members have been let down, but I haven't had any issues with their service.

I have dealt with Aaron a few times (long ago), but always private deals. That's where the R4 prepub came from.
He's a business, you can't go reaming him out for putting retail prices on things. You probably don't balk at paying $1.50 for a small soda at a convenience store when you can buy a 2 liter for 70 cents at the supermarket, do you? It's convenience, and capitalism. If you don't like the prices, don't complain about it, just don't buy from him.
Sometimes I think eBay was the worst thing ever invented.

First off... I *do* balk at paying that much for a small soda unless I have no other choice. I'm cheap because I have to be. Dammit Jim! I'm a Medical Assistant not a Doctor!  :P
Second... I almost *never* buy anything from eBay, again, unless I have no other choice. I prefer to support small, local businesses as much as I can by buying a majority of my collection from local small used book stores. I've gotten some great deals that way and made friendships that will last a lifetime.
Third.... I agree, eBay was one of the worst things ever invented.

I dont think NK is priced retail tbh. I think they are far above that on many items. Though I've seen silly "retail" prices at mom and pop stores too.. one store in Las Vegas/Henderson comes to mind immediately, and a few others.

Having said that, I don't despise them for that, really. It's easy to walk out of a store after seeing someone's prices versus the condition. I do despise NK for poor/innacurate descriptions. I don't know if you can chalk it up to ineptness or just seeing if they can get away with it figuring enough people will just throw up their hands and not go through the trouble of a return. And I'm not talking about the difference of opinion in "Fine" versus "Very Fine" or anything like that.

I dont think ebay was the worst thing ever invented. I do think that their business model allows for a certain percentage fraud which they are not that interested in policing.

I like options, so I like both Noble Knight *and* eBay.  The engaged consumer always wins when they have options :).

I've purchased so many things from Noble Knight over the years, that I would rate them only behind eBay as far as my "go to" options are concerned.  That said, I've always had to read their descriptions very carefully (due to reasons explained earlier in this thread) to make sure I was receiving a complete pre-owned product.

If you're buying in bulk, it's hard to beat Noble Knight's $9.95 Fed Ex option.

Well, consider the location...

As long as it makes them a buck, they don't care about anyone else.

Why I *love* living in the Sacramento area, LOTS of options for brick/mortar stores. I like to personally examine what I'm buying before I shell out my hard earned pennies.

Good point, but again, I'm too cheap to pay double what I am willing to for something.

Ebay is the greatest thing ever invented, or at least in the top ten. It's the worst thing except when one makes several thousand bucks selling a collection, or is able to work from home instead of a cube for a decade, or able to complete a collection.  If you think Ebay is the worst thing ever you just aren't using it correctly. My oneknock on Ebay is the stupid ways John Donawhore tried to destroy Ebay in the mid-oughts through his idiotic and unneccesary changes (that were walked back once he moved up to a purely ceremonial board position where he probably sits around and pats himself on the back for what he thinks he did to make Ebay and Paypal a success). Now that shithead is gone it seems to work pretty well.

As for Noble Knight, if you don't like it, don't buy from them, that simple. I have been able to find some sweet deals over the years by looking in the nooks and crannies of NK's game listngs.  I am able to find most of what I want cheaper at other places, but I've never had a problem with Aaron's business model.

Econ 102 suggests that, if a business has been around/surviving for a long time, then it is probably profit maximizing. If his things didn't sell, he'd lower the price. Seems like he knows what he's doing.

You raise some valid points. But, echoing some other thoughts, buying something for a fixed price online is a massive convenience, especially for those not connected to a big city. I've bought all my DCC modules from him for prices comparable or cheaper than eBay or other sources. He seems like a fair, straight up dealer.

I would never suggest otherwise. I am on a tight budget and paying premium prices just burns my biscuits.

For some items, when I see one come up, I just buy it. They're hard enough to find that there is no premium per se, because there aren't enough comparables to set a price. In that situation, if Aaron has it, I buy it.
