So, one of my dear friends has challenged me to help him remember the name of an old D & D module he played years and years ago.  We are both in our mid to late 40's, so really, could be anything early.  He can give me frustratingly little information.   I figure if anyone can pull this memory out of the collective subconscious, it would be you guys.

The memory goes like this:  The DM holds up a picture of a treasure hoard (in a "groovy 80's style") which contains several magic items.  The party members are invited to point out the one they want with no other information, and are then presumably stuck with their choice when the exact nature of the object is revealed at a later date.

I've looked through my collection of old modules, and I've run many internet searches looking for mention of the choosing of items and/or the illustration itself.  No luck so far.  I am trying to remember an instance in a module where the party might get to choose an item either before the adventure or after it as a reward.  It seems very "deck of many things"-ish.   In Dungeonland, falling party members can grab items off the walls, but not quite the same.

The circumstance of the memory is odd.  Why only one choice.  Why can't the party know what kind of wand/sword/scroll it is?  Just odd.  Really odd that in all the modules I've collected and read, I don't recall this illustration.  I wonder if it was something the DM just made up?

Not much to go on, but I love a good research challenge.  Thanks for the assistance!

If it's illustrated via an illustration booklet vs. just an illo on the page of the module, that would significantly narrow your options to ID the adventure to:

- C1 and Lost Tamochan tourney
- C2 and Ghost Tower tourney
- S1 Tomb of Horrors and Origins tourney
- S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks and Origins tourney
- Lost Caverns of Tsojconth (but not S4)

Some modules with possible pictures of treasure/magic items to be used as you describe also include:

- A4 - captured PCs' magic items looted while they were KO'd
- D1-2 frontispiece includes a treasure with with magic items
- S4 - the Easley pic of Drelnza lying on the slab and the treasures surrounding her

That's all that immediately pops into my head.  Browsing through the modules here @ Module Code Index or at the TSR archive @ TSR Archive: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons may also jog some additional thoughts for your friend.

I'm doing this without googling, but what was that one mod -- the one where as you go along in the dungeon you find several magic weapons?  You can't let go of them either, once you pick them up.  There was a sword, a bow, a shield, I think?  And then you have to use them to defeat the big bad at the end?

Something along those lines.  I wish I could remember the name, somebody else can maybe.

I wonder if that's the one you mean?

Oh yeah, and don't some of the solo adventures include illustration booklets too (O1, perhaps)?

Would also a nonTSR module be an option? I am thinking to the arduin products where along the modules you had also the artifacts cards...i never played them and unfortunately have no access to check at them at the moment...

Fantastic answer, Grodog.   That does narrow it a bit.  I'm going to review the PDF's for those and see if a likely illustration appears.  Thanks for the assist!

Ask him what item he took and what its powers were. White paper or colored? A cutout or insert? Were there any other pictures the DM showed during the module?
Groovy 80's style immediately made me think of Erol. He did many pictures of items; I believe I have one of his sets. Show your friend some samples of his art and see if it rings a bell stylewise. I'm sure the module is not a TSR one, one of the brilliant minds here would have gotten it (Allan, most likely). So, for non-TSR, it isn't a booklet. There would be a tiny cutout, and he'd remember that it was small. It was black and white, or he'd remember color. It had no writing or title, or he'd remember.
Role Aids has a boatload of modules that I haven't gotten to yet. They started in 1982, which puts it at a viable age for him to be playing (1984 or so). Judges Guild has nothing I've ever seen that is a candidate. If he can remember roughly how old he was and you can figure a year, it can rule out a lot.
My bet? If it isn't some obscure module, I'd say Arduin. All four modules came with item cards and (I believe) monster cards. The art description fits their artists (Morno, Otus, Schenck and someone else).

Also, ask him if the DM had a boxed set or books/modules. I think Arduin had a boxed set called The Arduin Adventure. Also also, ask him details about his character: did they use STR/INT/WIS etc or things like Stamina, Will, or other related terms. Also also also, ask him what dice he used. Some systems use multiple D6, some percentile, some d20. ALSO, did the party get a card with the item picture, or just point it out in a heap?

The Catacombs Books (Knight of the Living Dead, etc) had full page illustrations where the player was asked to choose from numberous items in the pictures, and whose nature would become clear later in the story. These were solo-play type adventures, however.

The One on One module (one DM and one player) O1 The Gem and the Staff also had illustrations of rooms where the player could pick out what he wanted to mess with while in the room...

He said "party members" so I discounted the solos, but that's a possibility. I don't know the Catacombs books, I have Knight of the Living Dead so I'll dig it up and look.
For Arduin, Death Heart, Howling Tower and Caliban inserts don't fit. I don't have Citadel of Thunder.

My money would be on Role Aids. But I can't recall a specific module.

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Shoulda been: ".. from Pangreenia to Floratopolis, from mystical Treeonia of spectral Forests to Schruborial dimensions." - The Forests of Leng

You my lord.

Have you found the secret that was lost?

Yes. You and the land are one.
