We're very familiar with the 1981 catalog cover... stone archway with critters top & sides, open door, products beyond.

This Sutherland design was originally used for point-of-purchase displays and at least one (yellow) banner.
In the original, the door is closed and damaged; hinges & a knocker, a demonic (efreeti?) face, and a dragon's tail protruding bottom right (image below).

(Regarding the yellow Banner, it has the (R) and says "The most popular fantasy game of the decade". The Gary Gygax estate sold one (GenCon 2011) for $1026. Another sold on eBay soon thereafter (Nov 2011) for $315. I'm sure the PoP display has been sold, but don't have it recorded.)

In all, when & how was this image used? Only the two cited (PoP & yellow D&D banner), or elsewhere also?

Hey Frank,

There is a negative image version used for another catalog (a UK version of the US one I think) and another black and white version used in several magazine ads. Here are all the gateway related items that I can think of at the moment:

Oh, and then the point of sale display that you mention and the Gateway to Adventure Poster (looking around for an image....).

Found the poster:

...and the display:

...and a cool version from a TSR France catalog:

A very nice example of the Display shown on the lower right of the PoS display picture linked by Paul is used/on display at every NTRPG Con, as are two copies of the banner; one signed by several RPG greats.

Didn't a banner get auctioned of at a Gen Con auction while still here in Milwaukee?  I seem to recall the sting defeat of loosing out on that item, lol!
