I seem to remember seeing that very early printings of the AD&D Monster Manual had a handful of art pieces that were redone for later printings. I think I remember the type III demon being one such drawing. Sutherland was rushed, turned in some pieces he wasn't pleased with, and got the opportunity to re-draw them.

This all happened very early, all during the time of the original Sutherland cover for the Monster Manual.

Am I dreaming?

Only a little bit:  Errata MM .  In the earlier printings, some drawings were left out, and gradually incorporated.
