Hi Everyone,
In my research to get to the source of my James Lamb DMG, I have discovered some clear identifying features to at least 3 different printings of the 1st Print.  Tome of Treasures identified 2 different printings which I would call the DMG 1st Beta and Gamma prints:

Tome of Treasures :: View topic - Dungeon Masters Guide (1979)

Tome of Treasures identifies irregularities in the sentence "ESSENTIAL REFERENCE INFORMATION FOR GAMEMASTERING" on the front cover that distinguishes 2 different printings in the DMG 1st Print. (See link above.)

I was able to identify a 3rd printing through a new irregularity that I discovered.  The differences in the 1st print DMGs can be identified through the "Flame Test" on the left mid-thigh of the demon.  This test helps to easily identify the 3 different printings.  Here are my proposed definitions of the various printings:

DMG 1st Alpha - This print has a blue flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon
This print also has the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned but does not have a red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING
DMG 1st Beta - This print has a red flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon
Also, per tome of treasures, this print does not have the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned, nor a red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING
DMG 1st Gamma - This print has no flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon
Also, per tome of treasures, this print has the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned and a red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING

The reason the blue flame appears to be the 1st Alpha print is the verification that the James Lamb copy (signed by Gary Gygax as the 1st print after his own) and the Tim Kask copy (verified by Tim as the first copy out of the box distributed by Tim from the first batch of DMGs) both have the blue flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon.  I am assuming that the 1st Gamma is the last since the 1st Alpha and the 1st Beta versions appear to be the only versions to have flames on the left mid-thigh of the demon.  I am not aware of any subsequent printings of the DMG from the 2nd print onward that have a flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon either red or blue as exhibited in the 1st Alpha and 1st Beta prints.

I am providing 3 photos of 1st prints that you can examine and clearly see the "Flame Test".  If anyone has any comments or clarifications, please let me know.  I am definitely open to constructive criticism and additional opinions.  Thanks!!!

Check the textures too on the covers between the beta (red "flame on!" :) ) and the gamma ("flame off!"). Are they different? I have one with the red that seems different in texture (smoother) than the gamma.
I have probably like 10-15 more copies to check in boxes...

I like the flame off and flame on comments.  :D  :D   Regarding texture differences, there does seem to be differences between the 3 but it is hard for me to say without more samples.  My 1st beta does seem smoother than my 1st gamma but it is also in better condition and therefore harder to tell.  The biggest difference appears to be between the 1st alpha and the others.  The 1st alpha, as I have said in my other post, appears to have a texture very similar to the 1st print monster manual where it absorbs the colors into a more cloth like stringy texture.  The photo of the 1st alpha I have shown is not in my possession but you can see the texture in the photo and my James Lamb copy exhibits that texture also.

Tome of Treasures also likes to measure the copies.  I do not have enough copies nor the ability to show a clear difference in cover sizes between the printings.  They appear to show a .1 cm difference between the length, width, and thickness of their 1st prints but this is harder for me to verify without better instruments and more copies.

:salut:

Hey all,
Long time no post.

If I'm seeing what I think I am (and it's not easy to see), the 'flame' deal appears to be a printing flaw, where a color or two from the four (CMYK) inks did not print for whatever reason (bad negative, dust, etc.). This can happen at any time during the print run, and when caught, usually means stopping the press and fixing the problem. Not really indicative of a print run, just a flaw.

It might be interesting to run a straight edge below the Reference line. If it is anything like my copy of the revised printing, the 'E' is merely visually higher, but in fact, it is aligned. Run a ruler along the bottoms of all 'E's. The difference in background and/or a black plate a smidgen out of registration would be my guess. Again, SOP for printing.

Cover material would be more significant, among other things.

Thanks for the post.  The blue flame and red flame may indeed be flaws.  I am relatively new to Acaeum.  I do not know how alpha, beta, and gamma printings are defined.   It does appear that some designation has been given to differences as basic as change in flyleaves or cover texture.  Whatever we want to call this, I am pretty sure these are 3 distinct print runs.  If someone has a 1st Print DMG, it likely falls into one of these 3 categories that exhibit, at a minimum, these 3 combinations of characteristics:

In other words, if you have a blue flame, you will also have the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned and no red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING and so on for the red flame copy and no flame copy.    The mis-aligned "E" will pass the ruler test.  If you have a 1st print where the last "E" in reference is not mis-aligned then you have the 1st print with the red flame.

So, whatever anyone wants to call it, I think there were 3 print runs of the 1st print that can be identified due to the above changes.  Whether these print runs just altered the above flaws or constitute something more, I am not sure.  What I do believe, is that the very first prints contained the blue flame.

In any event, I am interested to see if anyone else has a 1st Print that does not meet the characteristics shown above.  It also would be nice if some people can confirm that their prints do match the characteristics.  This would help improve the theory.  Thanks!

I have seven first print DMGs:
Only one of my copies has a mis-aligned E in REFERENCE and none of my copies has a RED DOT below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING as described above.
I would like to see some additional close up shots of the RED DOT and of the mis-aligned E.
As for texture of the cover, they all seem pretty much the same to me, some have more wear.

BLUE FLAME  One copy = DMG 1st Alpha - This copy does not have the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned, NO red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING

RED FLAME  Three copies = DMG 1st Beta - This copy does not have the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned, NO red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING

NO FLAME  Two copies = DMG 1st Gamma - This copy does not have the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned, NO red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING

NO FLAME  One copy = DMG 1st Gamma - This copy has the last "E" in REFERENCE mis-aligned, NO red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING
No need for a ruler, as the E is clearly out of line with the rest of the type on that line;  See scan below...

Hi Gnat.  Thank you very much for the reply.  Up until now, my sample set has only been about 8 copies of the DMG.  I am excited that you have so many first prints.  Is there any way to scan the front covers of the DMGs especially the word REFERENCE on your blue flame copy and the word GAMEMASTERING on your no flame copies?  You can see the red dot if you go to the tome of treasures link in my first post.  I think you may be missing that.  I am surprised that you do not have a single red dot on your no flame copies.  The texture difference I have found most noticeable in the blue flame copy but it is quite possible that cover materials did not necessarily match up with these abnormalities on the printing of the cover.   Thanks again.  Any photos are greatly appreciated.

Cheers!
Scott

By the way.  It did appear in Tome of Treasures that the red dot condition seemed to be erratic.  I thought that maybe those were blue flame copies that they had not noticed the blue flame before.

Ah, that there's a result of the magenta plate being waaaaayy off register at the least. You may note the reddish hue above the bar on the shield, and the light blue beneath, and the white-ish dropshadow under the type on the shield, etc. The reason the rest of the text appears 'in place' is because it looks like they 'trapped' the text (spreading the text color into the background) to prevent a shifted color making it look like text is misaligned. If they had not, the other type would appear to have a white edge on the bottom and left in this case like the "E INF". Another option would have been to let it 'self trap' if both the type and background had enough colors (CMYK) to effectively cover for any shifting.

The first print I have is exactly as the first alpha you described

Blue flame on the left mid-thigh of the demon,
I think (see picture) that the last "E" in REFERENCE is mis-aligned,
No red dot below the "N" in GAMEMASTERING.

Thanks Dwarf.  Yes, the misaligned E is more subtle at times.  That is why I am interested to see some additional photos of Gnats copies.  Thanks for the confirmation.

I still have some more boxes to dig through to get at the other 1st prints I have, but maybe the explanation really was that these were "variances" within the first printing process. For instance, they get some hot off the press, take a look, see that one of the plates was misaligned liked simpering said, make an adjustment, then run the next batch. See some extra color blotches, clean the equipment, run the next batch. But all during the first printing process. Not sure how the texture difference may come into play, though.

Hi Everyone,
First of all.  Thank you for your posts.  I really appreciate it.  There appear to be some common conditions that are here and some additional irregularities.  One additional criteria that may or may not help is the cover material.  I would be interested to hear from Gnat and Dwarf if the cover of their blue flame copies are of the texture I have described above:  more of a 1st Print Monster manual where you can see the grid type pattern and feel the stringy texture.  I believe I can see it in Dwarf's copy but it is definitely something that is hard to see in a photo.  Here is where I believe I am at with the first print analysis:

1)  Blue flame - 5 copies anazlyzed - all copies meet the criteria I first specified except for Gnat's copy that does not have the misaligned "E" in REFERENCE.  I would love to see a photo of this and hear what the texture of the cover is like for Gnat's copy
2)  Red flame - 6 copies analyzed - all copies meet the criteria I first specified
3)  No flame - 6 copies analyzed - these are all over the place.  This is the only print where the red dot appears and it definitely seems that the red dot occurrence is sporadic.  I am not sure if the red dot is tied to anything else.  It also appears that the misaligned "E" in REFERENCE is a bit sporadic.  I am not familiar with printing processes.  As Toad has mentioned, the E appears in the white shield and may be more noticeable there due to color issues which are much more complex than I can comprehend.  In addition, this may just be a loose E that is shifting constantly throughout the printing process which may explain the differences.  The fluctuations in the E seem to shift from extreme to no shift at all.

In any event, this has been quite helpful.  Please keep the information and photos coming.

Thanks,

Scott

I just want to point out to everyone that it is not just the "E" in REFERENCE that is mis-aligned, but also the "INF" in INFORMATION. Look closely  8O  and you will see that it is the letters that are printed "on the shield", so to speak, are misaligned.

Thank you - Paul

The texture of mine is not stringy, but smooth. Definitively not as 1st print monster Manual.
I took pictures but I missed to capture the texture.

Scott: No, I am not missing that, the dot is simply not present on my copies.
Yes, I saw the ToT thread and scans/picks before I posted above...
The reason I posted just one scan above is that it was the only one relevant to the discussion here for variances in prints.
As I stated in my first post I have only one copy that seems to have the lettering off a bit.
Other than the little flames; all my other copies seem to be normal for first prints (no dots/smooth texture, etc).

Once again, NO RED DOTS on any of my DMG copies.
As I stated above; ALL of the covers of my DMGs (Blue Flame/Red Flame/No Flame) are smooth textured, though some covers show more wear than others.

Paul: Good observation... that the INF is also mis-aligned...
