I'm excited but at the same time I was excited about 3e coming out and that was a huge disappointment. I hope for the best but my expectations aren't nearly as optimistic.

I'll grab the Starter Set and hope it has something that will intrigue me, but I can't imagine it being better than what has come before.

I still love 3.5!

And from what I understand 5.0 will remain a d20 system (all numbers add up...).

I'll buy the starter set and the books and try it out. Then I'll play my Pathfinder events.  

I'll probably buy them - but I find the covers to be really uninspiring.   It looks like the designer just chose a few prints and slapped on their new (ugly) logo and copy.  

Perhaps I'm judging too harshly?

My son rolled up two 5th-level characters (fighter and MU), and I ran him thru a one-level home brew dungeon.
The mechanics are simple: roll a d20, see whether you beat a target number.
Other than the AAC, etc., it felt like old school to me.

One thing I noted: Magic Users appear to get as many cantrips as they want, whenever they want.  Maybe I misunderstood the rule, but that seems to be the way it works. It gave it a Harry Potter feel.  I actually kinda liked it.

I may get in, will definitely get the starter set and decide from there.  Two things could push me over to either side on yea / nay:  declaration of old school support, and a clear and welcoming OGL.  Cautiously optimistic!

The Return of Basic D&D - and it will be free.  

I will certainly buy the new sets. I did all the playtest stuff and to me it looks like a return to 2e-ish style rules. Not that 2e was my favorite in the least, but D&D Next sure "seems" like it is more my style than 3.0-3.5.
I am very interested in the Kobold Press modules, too. Though I have to wonder about going right into the apex of D&D monsters. There is nothing wrong with making a splash at the launch of the new system, but if you set the bar with perhaps one of the most iconic power creatures in the game, where do you go from there? But since Steve Winter is one of the authors, it is a must buy for me.
