The first-off-the-presses copy of Runequest was auctioned about five years ago. It got a decent number of bids, although selling for less than the opening bid to this DMG. So sure, I can see someone actually buying it.

If it's a near-first copy, then it's unquestionably a first-first-first-first printing. It would thus settle for all time the otherwise eternal questions of the Acaeum DMG page. The first one sets off the categorizations of all subsequent printings, so its every detail is a potential point-of-distinction. This could change everything.

Impressed!! Although well expensive, I can understand why someone with the money in hand (i.e not me!) would have a go at this. It is a very very very cool inscription. I would be very sure to get some additional supporting material from the seller - even a letter confirming sales history would help.

This I think can be referred to the recent posts here comparing rpg collecting with comic book collecting. I broadly agree with the idea that many common or garden D&D/AD&D items will remain cheap to pick up, whereas certain rare items (e.g. one of the confirmed and signed first DMs Guides, or a mono Lost Caverns of Tsojconth, or a Character Archaic, etc..) will retain value.


(just wish I had picked up one of those minty Tsojconths a few years back ...)

Edited to add, in fact I think it is a good thing that I can still pick up now, 30 or more years later, a really good quality DMs Guide for £10 (ish), but also that something like this goes for a chunk of money. In a way, that elusive value is a part of what collecting is about.

Nah... I first print woodie sold for ~7,500US about a couple of years ago (it was quite minty though). And then there was issue #2 of the Domesday Book that sold for 18K back in '08...

It's some kind of record!! Anyway, this right here is why I started listing all my sales as Buy-It-Nows with a Make Offer button. List the price a little high, then accept a realistic offer if you get one. This way, the item is up for sale as long as it takes for the right buyer to see it. Otherwise, you only get a week to hope that deep pocket guy happens to be looking at your item. Auctions are looking to either be a thing of the past, or something you do when you don't have the time to sit and wait for that right price. Times, they are a-changin'!!
