grodog wrote in [OT] Heading to France in May!:Thanks for your input, Chris! I'll print it to talk with Heather and her mom. I heard a recent NPR story on Versailles, and thought it would be fun to go there, too. I hadn't thought about sunny vs. rainy stuff to do, but heading to museums is definitely on our to do list, rain or shine! It's beautiful inside, but the coolest thing about this area are the artists. Have everyone in your group get their portrait done. Yes, you can haggle for the price, but you get what you pay for. The good artists wait for customers and the bad ones try and convince you to hire them. There's lots of other artsy stuff up there too. Eat at a cafe or restaurant and watch the sun set over the city.
Big picture we're gonna be in:- Paris May 17-22- Amboise (Loire Valley) May 22-23- St. Remy (Provence) May 23-26- Paris overnight May 26-27Outline of Paris plans:Fri morning arrive:1) Buy 4-day Paris Museum Pass at airport2) Around 5pm - Outside of Notre Dame & go into Paris Archeological Crypt3) Either an afternoon ride-around-the-city Bus Tour or an evening Boat Ride on the SeineSat:VersaillesSun:LouvreMon:1) Inside Notre Dame2) Either afternoon Bus Tour or evening Boat Ride on the SeineTues:Eiffel TowerHow's it look? It's complicated piecing just that many To Do's together because of closing dates as well as cautions about bad days to go because they're super busy (e.g. many places closed Monday; "avoid Versailles Sunday and Tuesday" - that leaves Saturday; etc.).Yet to outline the Amboise & St. Remy plans.
You have a great itinerary, with enough time to get a taste of each of the areas and maybe entice you to go back to the places you like most. I am assuming that in the Vallee de la Loire and in Provence you will have a car, as it would be difficult to move between towns without it.Lets start with Provence - near Saint-Remy there is so much to see! Avignon, Arles, Aigues Mortes, Camargue, Nice, Montecarlo and Monaco, Cap d'Antibes, Saint Paul de Vence, Eze, just to name a few. This could easily take a week, mostly be Aure while driving around from one town to another you are going to run into little gems worth a stop.Vallee de la Loire - Amboise is a very good choice, with its own caste, the residence where Leonardo lived his last years various museums and the Pagode. Near by there are a few other castles to be seen, and you could just drive up and down the Loire, the landscape is quite beautiful and peaceful after the traffic in Paris.Paris - there is so much to see, the itinerary really depends on what you like.
