I believe I have figured out that this original painting that Jeff Easley did was intended to be the box art for the RPGA Set 1 miniatures from 1983. I thought at first it could have been for one of those sets that was probably unreleased ("Companion" or "Expert"), but having gone through the Lost Minis Wiki website

http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lost ... _%28TSR%29

the character depictions match up with two of the three characters on the Tim Truman cover to RPGA 3 "The Forgotten King", as well as three of the mini's themselves: Ringo, Silevran and (I think) Lyman

I'm not sure why this art didn't make it onto the box set.

This is the painting...

btw, if anyone has a TSR catalog from 1983 and/or 1984, I'd be curious to see what art/info they used to pre-sell the miniature sets (including anything for the "companion" and "expert" ones as well).

Seems like a good thesis, Spock. Also, I love how non-anime those miniatures are.

I know what you mean. I really don't care for all the anime-meets-D&D-style miniatures or art for that matter. I like anime, but not specifically mashed up with the D&D game.
