Harry Harrison, the creator of the Stainless Steel Rat, Bill the Galactic Hero, and the author of the original Soylent Green novel, died today, August 15, aged 87.

Sad to hear.

I loved the Soylent Green movie and the book was damn good also. Just wondering how long before they remake the movie.

Hmm. Never read the book. Have to pick it up now. (Currently reading R.E.H.'s El Borak).

If they do remake the movie, I hope it's a lot darker than the original film.

I just saw the movie again this weekend with my wife. I don't know how you could get much darker already. It's basically a horror movie masquerading as a SF movie, there are exactly zero points of light in this flick. Despite the Charlton Heston character still being alive at the end (or is he, he's been hurt pretty badly,and I doubt they waste many meds on injured people in this future), his best friend is dead, he's found a massive coverup that reaches to the highest levels of government and they are willing to kill to keep it secret, the human race is resorting to cannabalism to survive, the world is an overpopulated mess, his "girlfriend" is a piece of furniture for some pervert, and nothing has improved from the first scene of the movie to the last. This is so bleak and dystopian it makes Gotham City of the Batman movies look like a paradise. Pretty depressing stuff. I'm actually worried they'll "happy ending" it instead.

Maybe dark isn't the word I was looking for.
More gritty? Definately less campy (or what passed as edgy for the '60s). Less whining about the condition of society and more kicking someone in the balls to make it right.

Well I will say it's definitely budget SF. My wife and I laughed at some of the scenes, especially what some set designer inthe 70s thought "cool inthe year 2022" would look in a hip apartment (apparently, lots of tile and.....stuff that looked cool in the 70s).

The only good Chinger is a dead Chinger! Always got a good chuckle out of the Bill series. Stainless Steel Rat was enjoyable as well. The Deathworld Trilogy - guns wired to your body was freaky cool, as was a planet where EVERYTHING was trying to kill you. He will be missed.

The movie opens with a montage of photos, a number of which are people wearing face masks. The main character wears a bandanna around his neck in much the way people now wear them when not covering their faces. &nd there are riots. &nd it's set in 2022. Harry Harrison was on to something..oh dear lord...no...stimulus checks are made of people! Tell the world!

Right? I was very sad to see this news on the thread list. I grew up reading the Stainless Steel Rat paper backs and loved them.

Then I realized this happened....8 years ago?! How did I miss that? And then I was even more sad.
