I think a movie about D&D players....not just guys who play D&D (see the difference?) cannot help but focus on the most socially maladjusted people.  Maladjustment is what is interesting, right?

The audience would not be able to recognize an ordinary, off the rack D&D player because they would look no different than anyone else.  What would be the comedy or drama in that?

It is just like a Christian character portrayed in a movie.

How does the audience know this detail?

The character has to do something weird or zany or ultra-religious, otherwise the audience won't get what's going on.

It's the same reason that Edward II was portrayed as a scrawny fembot in Braveheart.  Edward II was tall, handsome and athletic.  If they'd chosen an actor who was tall, handsome and athletic the audience might not have caught on to why he was considered weak.
