I don't remember if stores sold their stock or if the remaining books were taken off the shelves...
Uhm, perhaps the situation in France was different from the Italian one... The publisher never asked the 3.5 books back nor offered anything at all to retailers to 'encourage' them to jettison D&D 3.5 I was told by some buyers that D&D 3.5 was starting to get 'hard to find' but this could be said of
RPGs in general here

and you can find various sellers on eBay (myself incluided) selling the D&D 3.5 core books ar cover price. But as soon as the publisher sells them no more, I'm sure prices will rise very fast! Perhaps the French publisher (does it still exist?) pulped its stock and so prices went high... The Italian one never does this

albeit, occasionally, offers clearance sales (for example on Italian Star Wars
d20 books that in Italy tanked big time again after the sad failure of Star Wars D6... ). I'm pretty sure that D&D 3.5 in Italy actually oversells D&D 4.0 at the moment...
