I'm sure there is a large degree of cultural interpretation going on there.  In the US, connotations for "store" or "shop" are often associated with large, open, merchandise laid out for display, etc.

Different countries and cultures have different degrees of the definition.  Can't speak for Italy, but from my time in Japan, comparisons are odd.  I've been to stores that have standing room for less than 5 people at a time that are considered "definitive" for thier merchandise / brand (can you imagine going to a Nike or Levis outlet where only 5 people can shop at once? - unthinkable in the US!).  Things like Walmart, Costco, etc exist in Japan, but even then the amount of merchandise per sq. ft. could make a clausterphobic person freak out just from standing in the doorway of the store.

Truly an odd phenomonen that often doesnt come up in conversation.
