If you play (or have even played in the last year or so) Dungeons & Dragons, there's an interesting survey (just 14 questions) online: http://bit.ly/dE7ZtK

I don't think the site is working properly. I tried pressing the Reset button for this question, but I don't feel any younger.

I can't partake in the survey. OD&D isn't supported.

Seems a bit budget/sketchy-at least they didn't ask for an e-mail address!

If you believe that ADVANCED DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS is a game worth playing, you will certainly find it doubly so if you play well.

It'll probably go into the next Ultimate book of Ultimate Crap or some such that gets produced for $20....

I'm sorry, but I have to wonder... what have I done to you? That was a rude and snarky statement.

I believe that when they wrote "Basic" they meant OD&D.

Most of us players who went from OD&D to AD&D tended to completely miss the Mentzer D&D boxed sets...and it was always kind of puzzling why they existed.   :?

It is quite confusing how "advanced" D&D existed well before "basic" D&D.  Like most AD&D players, I used modules from both editions without distingusing between the two.

I suppose, most accurately, AD&D should be viewed as a direct extension of OD&D and Basic D&D ought to be thought of as a re-packaging of AD&D...much in the same way that AD&D 2nd Edition is sort of AD&D's idiot younger sister.

Or, I could just be completely wrong about it all.  (I had fun typing this up, anyway.)  :D

Debbie:

I can't speak for the specific piece of snark you just encountered, but many of the members here look askance at some of the newer collecting guides and websites.

They feel (and rightly so, in some cases) that outsiders just pick up information from the Acaeum and similar sites and reproduce it as their own work...sometimes without even crediting the Acaeum as a source.

I'm not saying that specifically about your publication.  I'm just explaining the feelings that some people have stated.

Dont apologise, you've not upset me.

But FormCritic summed up the sentiment behind my post perfectly. Having read reviews of your 'guide' I think my feelings towards your 'work' are vindicated.

Point of order: the first Basic Set (Holmes) preceded the first AD&D book (Monster Manual) by several months [~early Fall 1977 vs Dec 77/Jan 78].

I suppose, most accurately, AD&D should be viewed as a direct extension of OD&D and Basic D&D ought to be thought of as a re-packaging of AD&D...much in the same way that AD&D 2nd Edition is sort of AD&D's idiot younger sister.

:?:

I agree that AD&D is an extension of OD&D. However, one with far more rules and restrictions. The Moldvay / Mentzer lines are repackagings of OD&D and much more in the spirit of the original than AD&D with its "one true way" ethos (ignored by many in actual play).

It's the classic case of the mad scientist who becomes overly possessive of his research. If he discovers a rare plant, he'd rather burn down the forest than let it go into the world without proper accreditation. I remember those pre-internet days when I'd try to compile lists of early TSR titles by their product number, wondering what went to the missing numbers, & what that "Character Archaic" thing was which didn't seem to fit into the scheme of things. Around the same time, a friend was compiling a detailed index to Heavy Metal. On a typewriter. Back then you could delve into something so obscure that it seemed like you were the only one to truly appreciate it as lost & forbidden lore. Now there are no secrets left in the world.

I know my classifications are mixed up....

I don't count the Holmes Basic Set as "basic D&D" because I think that term more correctly applies to the Mentzer Basic Set.

I see the Holmes set as OD&D in a boxed set, given order that a non-expert can pick up and play.

So...Holmes is OD&D as far as I'm concerned.

So who is making money out of feeding people through the survey?
I hadn't linked the two threads, but I did note the survey host is a mass marketing data farm.
Whatever, the more dhunton posts, the more it seems like they're only here to leech and not contribute.

Given that the introduction by Holmes mentions compiling the rulebook from OD&D and the first three supplements, Holmes is in fact OD&D, with his rules for initiative, and alignment partly pulled from the alignment article that was reprinted in Best of Dragon I.

The survey writer should have been well aware that OD&D and Holmes were first, and then the family tree split into AD&D and B/X. Since the survey writer clearly omitted OD&D, their responses are going to be skewed, and thus the entire survey sample invalid. Of course, they may not give a damn if all they're out to do is make a buck.

Seems to be a fake survey for the money to me. No benefit to anyone. My question is whenther the author behind UUCG who says they produced such a high quality work, and who also published this thread, is behind a survey written by someone who doesn't know much about even the basics of D&D. If so, it would seem that they are just here leeching for money from a community they neither partake in, nor give a F about. Let's hope they can distance the two.

As far as I am concerned, you would be wrong.
Holmes was a distillation and simplification of OD&D, but another animal entirely.
