Anyone know of a free pdf program that allows you to read and print pdfs? I've seen a bunch of offers on the net but I don't know which ones are trustworthy.

If you just want to read and print then Adobe Reader is fine:  http://get.adobe.com/reader

If you need to edit/write, that's a more involved question.


Areas of interest/knowledge: Harn, WFRP, Ars Magica, anything BRP based such as CoC, Runequest, Pendragon and all their related games

If you want to edit, I bought pdf2word for about £3 off eBay and it works a treat, doing as it says, turning it into a word doc including images :)

I use foxit reader. I do this for one purpose.  It allows me to print images out of the PDF separate from the text.  Most useful for generating generic maps for handouts without all the room numbers, notes etc. found on the maps in the book.

Note: in order to EDIT PDFs however, their version requires the $$$ upgrade.  The reader/printer is free.

Wow, worked like a charm. Thanks Smarmy!

The problem with adobe is that it wants you to instal inactiveX on your computer (or some name like that) and it needed me to shut down my firewall to allow it. I've heard bad things about inactiveX (if that's the freaking name).

Foxit reader is pretty good.  I have used PrimoPDF extensively and it works very well too.  Also free.

I had a few Hackmaster adventures that I found online (Temple of Existential Evil for one), unfortunately I couldnt read them because they were in .cbr format.  Apparently the format was something some asshat created just for comic books.  So I had to have a particular reader just to read them.  Screw that.  Found out I could do this instead:

Another bit of info.  If you are looking for an application for a specific purpose, one of the best places to go is: http://download.cnet.com/windows/

Most of the software they offer is either free or free to try.  It's all tested and is supposed to be virus and malware free (I've never had any issues).  There are ratings and screenshots for most of the apps as well.  Found some really good stuff there over the years.

I use cutePDF for doing the same thing.  Anything you can print can be redirected into a PDF file.

pdf995 does the same, and if you *do* want to be able to edit pdf's (combine, cut pages out, that sort of thing), it's one purchase for a lifetime of customer support.
