I spent a chunk of the afternoon with Laura & Jim at the Roslof's house today. Jim has been unconscious for more than a day now, and it seems like the end must be near. He only roused slightly when we had to move him for therapeutic purposes. He is in a hospital-style bed near the living room of their house, and hospice care is in 3 times a week. Not enough, really, but the Roslofs, like so many freelancers, have no insurance -- which is why he was diagnosed so late to begin with. (They didn't have the $8000 needed for testing.) I did get to say "Goodbye," and I hope he heard me, though there's no way to tell for sure. He seems to be comfortable, except when moved. Laura is bearing up as well as can be expected, given the circumstances. She remains strong in her faith, and their kids all live nearby. She was very grateful for the cards, flowers, food, etc. that people have been sending and/or bringing to the house. It is certainly _not_ too late to send good wishes or cards. The lesson, I think, is to cherish your family and friends every day, and remember they will not always be with us. I'll be surprised if Jim makes it through the weekend. Remember the Roslofs in your thoughts and prayers.
