Hello all, nice site you all have here.    I am an old time D&D player (started playing in 1980) and I have decided to sell my entire collection of D&D related items (over 220+ unique items).   The last time I play was over 15 years ago.

I figured I would probably make more money by selling everything individually, but to tell the truth, I don't want to go through that hassle.

I would like to get $1,500 - $2,000 for the whole lot.  And before you tell me you need to see a item list (which I am working on) before you can give any value to the collection.  

My question is, do large lots of items sell well on eBay ?  Before I throw away the money to list such a lot, I figured I should ask some people that would know.     Or am I better off trying to sell directly to a collection or a store ?

And to sweeten the pot more I am considering adding some Battletech items, my large Talisman collection and Mayfair Games Empire Rail Builder games (Empire Builder, Iron Dragon, British Rails, Nippon Rails & Australian Rails).

As Grug said, definitely piece this out...if anything, at least group "like" objects together (all the BT stuff as one lot, for example).  You'll maximize your profits much better that way, and honestly it's not that much trouble. So you are mailing say 10 lots instead of one, you'll make up for your effort for several hundred dollars more profit.   If I lived close to you I'd help you out just so you would get maximum worth.

For example, I'd sell at BT as one lot, all Talisman as another, all Rolemaster/ICE items as one lot, all Basic D&D boxes as one lot, all "X" series in one set, all AD&D hardbacks as one lot, all "letter" AD&D modules as one lot, all the Gazeteers as one lot, etc.  I'd pull out a few big money items (say, B10, T1-4, Chainmail, Immortals boxes set) to sell separately.  You'll do better than selling as all one lot but still not as good as pieceing it all out.

Better yet, put up a few items (T1-4, Chainmail, B10) in the Acaeum Classifieds.  You'll get some offers and most of them will be fair, and no Ebay fees to worry about.

Condition and completeness are very important. For example B10 and X10 have cardboard counters and maps, etc... if these are missing the value drops markedly. The Rules Cyclopedias have some sheets in the back that are sometimes removed, the Battletech books often have problems with binding glue that has gone dry and cracked and pages fall out, the GAZ series usually has component pieces, and many modules have poster maos that are often missing. Do the modules have writing in them, tears, highlighting, stains, etc...

If you sell the lot as is without checking completeness and condition then expect serious biddeers to assume the worst and there goes a great deal of money if they are in good or better condition and complete.

And if you sell items that are not as described you can expect charge backs or returns which are a big hassle in themselves.

Do yourself a favor and check out prices. Sell the more valuable stuff individually or at least put smaller lots together like X series, B series and check completeness and condition.

If you go the auction route be prepared for the possibility of a low final bid. Auctions are a gamble. If you sell on a website classified make sure you know what price you want and how you sell it (I find a USPS money order to be the only safe bet from buyers you don't know) because you have no protections built in (though ebay and especially amazon can bone sellers no matter what they do such as getting delivery confirmation).

The more time and effort you put into selling, the more money you can get out of it, and the difference betweeen dumping a collection and carefully pricing it and waiting for the right buyer is normally astounding.

I agree with all the folks above.
At the very least sell smaller GROUPS of like minded items as smaller lots.
What Badmike suggested for your situation as to group listings seems a very good plan to me.

Plus as mentioned, you might try to sell some of the stuff on this site, saving E-Bay fees.
The folks here will give you good value for them.
Make a list for the classifieds and take offers for say one week and accept the offer(s) you like the most for each item, or group of items.

The Gazetteers will get GOBS of bids... each one...
By Not listing those separately you will just rip yourself off.

Those Trail Maps, and the Rules Cyclopedias were not specifically mentioned above (Except by Spock), but the Maps are very popular on E-Bay and here too, and the RCs typically sell (Depending on condition) from $25-$50 as individual listings on E-Bay; and you have THREE copies...
Unless someone here makes a good offer for one or more, I would let the market dictate those items, but I certainly would NOT list them all at the same time... you would be fighting yourself for bidders if so.

I am almost exclusively a collector myself and seldom sell stuff unless I need the funds for other things (Like now).
As such I am often tempted to list a big group of things just to get it all over with...
But from my limited selling experience and from great advice like that above it is simply better for your wallet to list as much as possible as single items.

Another problem with listing it all as one HUGE lot other than the obvious.
Re-Sellers are always on the hunt for good deals.
Yeah they will typically bid for this sort of deal for a while, but once the biddings gets to a certain point... they stop.
They WONT pay going rate for anything... as there is no profit in doing so.
Meaning you wont get total value for a HUGE lot unless some rich dude (or two of them) decides he wants a bunch of your stuff, or is just getting started with collecting D&D...

Blackmoor pretty much summed this up. To really maximize your take, you need to break it up into groups. Keep like items together - module sets, the Gaz sets, etc. I would even break the HCs down into sets of one each (hpb, mm, dmg, ect). I might think about selling the Talisman stuff individually as well as the Rules Cyclopedia books or other high end stuff.
Post the sets on the classifieds here and wherever else you think. This site is going to be your best bet for much of it.
Selling it as one big lot will most likely reduce your overall take.
Don't take it to a brick and mortar store - you will get 50% or less of what they think they can sell it for. While you have some nice stuff, you also have a ton of "standard" stuff that sells pretty cheap in the condition I see in your pictures. On-line resellers will offer you even less.
It just comes down to how much work you want to invest. More work, more profit.

I'll echo the sentiment of everyone else.  As big lots go, this one probably would sell, as there is some desirable material (although nothing "rare"), and is certainly better than many large ebay lots I see (better items and actually is many items).

The only other thing I'd add is to check out the Talisman material more closely - I think some of that might have good value, but I may be confusing it with something else.

I don't miss the stuff... yet, though I may wake in a cold sweat with a forlorn depression from it's loss sometime before I die.  

But the memories made and friends involved will never die.
