Well after almost 10 years since the last inventory I am updating my collection list.   This time it is all going in one giant database.  I always had a very good idea of what I needed but some the printings were never carefully counted or catalogued.  For common stuff I used to buy lots, keep the good stuff and box up the stuff I know I had to sell later, this has resulted in around 40 magazine boxes of extras.  Already in my collection of stuff I have found 3 copies of B10  (complete with counters) multiple C mods (how about 4 copies of C5 all Near mint or better) and I am sure this list will grow.

The result will be a giant sell off of my extras in the New Year (hopefully February), There are even a few rares (like the R mods) that I have upgraded that will be going out the door.  The goal is to unload the 40 boxes and make room for more stuff I do not already own.

Anyway I am very excited to get this done , already catalogued around 200 items (on the first day).  It is really cool to finger through the old stuff while bagging and boarding.  I even got some official Role Playing Size storage bags from a local card shop.

I have trouble with my handful of items, so also wish you luck and have fun! If you have any spares you don't want....

i use excel. i had mentioned to Bracton earlier today that having recently finished going through all of the items i've acquired in the last four years, and reorganizing the wall, i'm at 7962 different frp items, magazines, manuscripts and maps (like the sole surviving city-state map and rob kuntzs' demonworld map). i couldn't have done it without excel-and my niece doing all of that typing for me...

I am using excell as well!  I just do not know how to use Access properly so that writes that one off.

I'm newer to collecting than many here... luckily I began with an Excel sheet, and have carried thru so it's current... I like the idea of embedding jpegs in the worksheet (have to figure that one out yet )  I tried photobucket but maxed out my account on Dragon images (!)

I of course use excel.. I haven't thought of embedding images, I know what Dragon Mags looks like and I can always google an image.. sounds like a lot of work with no real added benefit.. besides sites like the acaeum wiki/ Noble knight/ToT/ Amazon have the images pretty well covered..

My first thought was to hyperlink, but I agree about the moving file issue. Way too much work with a possibility of a break.

I have not tried to directly embed, but maybe I will give it a shot.

By the way, I have a folder with pratically every item I ever sold on ebay in pic form. It is huge!

Generally, the images aren't actually wrapped up into the excel file are they?  I think normally the images are still stored somewhere else and it links in the location (directory path and name) for the file.  You probably set the column type to be "image" or something so it knows to interpret it as an image and show a thumbnail.

I guess they probably could have an option to encapsulate everything into one giant excel file but that just seems crazy.

I remember working on a project like this when I worked up North for a surveying company.  They were scanning in all their surveying maps and getting rid of the huge warehouse of bins that stored the originals.  Everything was going into the excel file to quick and easy access instead of sending someone to the warehouse to try and find a specific map.  Also, digital storage is cheaper than the warehouse rental.

You guys are way more organized than me.  But this thread has inspired me to catalog my own very modest collection.  I'm moving in a couple of weeks anyway, so I may as well take the opportunity to spread my stuff out and see what I've got.

It does sound like a good idea for insurance too, but does insurance even cover this kind of stuff?
