New design award to be awarded in 2011 at North Texas RPG Con

The Three Castles Awardâ„¢ was conceived by Robert Kuntz and with
the able assistance of Douglas Rhea forwarded as an award to be
presented to designers of the highest merit for outstanding work in the
industry of Role Playing Game design. Only one such award can be
given annually. And due to the exacting guidelines used for determining
what qualifies as an exemplary design, only those designs that match or
exceed the guidelines can qualify to be awarded. If no entry meets these
criteria, no award is achieved for that year.

The entries are judged for form, presentation, organization, content,
usefulness, design, playability, uniqueness and art.

If you are an aspiring game designer with a newly published, qualifying
work and wish to enter it for consideration, please refer to the 3CA
guidelines downloadable from: NTPRGCon.com

Year 2011's 3C Award judges have roughly 200 years of game design and other far-ranging industry experience between them.  Many of the judges have been nominated for, or won, awards for work in the industry.  Their work as a whole has been noted for excellence and/or for raising the bar in game design or interrelated areas.  They are:  Dennis Sustare, Paul Jaquays, Steven J. Winter, Tim Kask and Robert J. Kuntz.

Basically, if you have published anything RPG related between October 1st of last year (2009) and October 1st of this year, it is eligible for submission for the award. All you need to do is send 2-3 copies of your item to the address indicated at the NTRPG Con site (ntrpgcon.com), fill out the necessary submission sheet (also at the site) and wait to see if the steering committee chooses your creation to move on to the judges.  The award is an absolutely beautiful piece of sculpture depicting the Three Castles most affiliated with old school D&D and the founders of our hobby (Castle Greyhawk, Castle Blackmoor, and El Raja Key).  I personally have never seen any sort of gaming award that has the same sort of tremendous workmanship and value as the Three Castles award; it is a huge chunk of awesome! Below is a link to a photo of the award, which was premiered at the 2nd annual NTRPG Con this June.

http://trollhomework.blogspot.com/2010/07/three-castles-design-award.html

It is the hope of the NTRPG Con Committee and Rob that with time the award will be considered one of the premier awards in the RPG community, so we did it up right.  We also hope the high standards of the award will help to make it simply more than "just another award" and the winner or winners can rightly claim to have written or designed the BEST RPG game, rules set, adventure or supplement of that year.

There is a bit of confusion on this issue.  The nominate others option is mainly for publishers who want to submit a work by one of their writers or designers...for example, if Goodman Games wanted to nominate something Harley Stroh had published for them, they would then send in the sample products to be judged.  I can nominate Harley all I want, but if he doesn't send in a module he has done, with the paperwork filled out, it doesn't mean anything.

If you are self-published, obviously you would have to "nominate" yourself, otherwise there would be nothing to judge as you have to send in the set of rules, adventure, supplements, etc to be judged.

If you know of someone who has published something in the last year, and you think it's something that should be nominated, please email or call them and encourage them to submit their work for the award. I have talked to several potential nominees and in almost all cases they were unsure if their items would match the standards of the submission (they would, the authors were just being too modest).

That seems like quite an awkward way of doing things.
The premis is that publishers come and say, "Gimme, gimme. We want it for our writer/publisher." But people who use and play products cant point to something and say, "I think that's a really good writer/product because..." They have to go to the writer and say, "Look, nip over here and say gimme this cos I wrote this."

The whole system seems screwed up. Surely the people who use the product, pay for it, read it and love it, are the people who should be saying, "Take a look at this." I'm not saying it should be based on numbers of votes or anything, but surely there is a more credible way of evaluating new products that just assessing those products who's companies are going to mooch up and ask for an award to be given to them?

How credible is any award system when the people who want them have to go and ask for them. It seems that there is a build in devalue system already built in that way. Like saying, these people got this cos they asked for it and we agreed, not because people like the product or think it is well written or good.

I completely understand the private evaluation from a committee thing. It works and so long as it's not political, it's credibility is carried on the experience and expertise of the committe. But taking nominations only from companies and writers who want one for themselves just doesn't sit right. It smacks of insider back patting and self aggrandisement, and that part has little integrity to it.

Is it just a way of getting a logo onto more publications? Or is it about recognising talent and contributuion to the industry?

Time OUT

Who in the world said anything about "nominating" anyone ????

This is NOT a nomination process .... never has been

If a person ie: writer, designer etc has produced a product and they want to attempt to win the award, then they need to fill out the form and send in the product.

THERE IS NO NOMINATION PROCESS ... if I typed that somewhere, then please direct me to my mistake and I will remove it...

The award is for the individual writer/designer... not the publisher.

But a publisher could send in a product on behalf of a writer/designer, but the publisher will not win the award. The best they can do is claim they have an award winning writer/designer

Ian you make good points and your concerns are valid.  But Doug and I have had to realize that this is just the way things get done.  If you and 30 others nominate something by Joe Blow and yet he never submits anything to the committee, there is nothing there in front of us to judge how awesome and brilliant his work is.  That is why I have been behind the scenes talking to some small press publishers, writers and designers and urging them to submit their works.  I realize it seems narcissistic to think your item is the best...but seriously, do you really want to buy/play something by a designer who thinks his stuff is just ok?   Ego should play some part in it, and you must admit part of success is someone not only with an idea, but someone who thinks that idea is worthy enough for publication....and if that means they have to publish it on their own, then by God they are going to do it.

Again if you have read or played something in the last year you definitely think is something that is above average and should be recognized, I encourage you to tell the writer/designer that this is something that should be sent in for the award.   If they won't do it, then "out" them by putting their name here and telling all of us what a great product they have.  Maybe after a groundswell of support they will give in and submit their work.  Believe me, I will PERSONALLY hound anyone who has published something in the last year I have considered superior in design to submit their work, because I want to have the BEST items considered by the judges for the final award (It is in our best interests after all to have the award go to the most worthy recipient).

Again I understand how the process rankles but that is just the process, not the final result.

And by "nominate" I mean a publisher submitting a work done by someone else, as Doug points out, just a bad choice of word there.  There is no "nomination", just submission of the product and acceptance by the committee.  And again as Doug points out, the DESIGNER/WRITER gets the award, NOT the publisher.

This award is not "auto given" to anyone

and it's not the job of the Committee nor the the panel of judges to go looking for product...

If you want to win a race, pagent, contest, sport event etc... you have GO THERE YOURSELF and ENTER THE CONTEST to be considered ...

??? So not sure what all this blabber about:

"How credible is any award system when the people who want them have to go and ask for them"

I am not going to award you the Gold Medal at the next Olympics just because I know you are the best, you'd better show up, fill out the entry form, meet all the requirements, and run the race to be considered...

Am I missing something ?

So we have a committee of the aware and informed, they look at what has been published and evaluate the products based on their expertise and experience, and then offer an award to the lucky recipient. I can see that working, like approaching and saying, "Hey. Mr X, we'd like to give you this award becuase we really think you did a great job publishing Product Y." I can see thatbestowing value and recognition of work, by a committee of some repute.

It was just the whole idea of it having an award that authors/publishers came and asked for consideration for that seemed to jar. Looks like Doug and I posted at the same time. 'Running the race' has already been done, if someone has published their product, and meeting the criteria is not something they have any control over, as the product has already been published, and the time, means and process are already complete. The only variable that has not been decided is candidacy, and you are suggesting they ask for it, rather than being considered based on their product being or worth. Just the idea of asking for an award after the event devalues it. To draw a similar comparison, what value would a bravery award be for people who had to go and ask for them? The deed is done, the facts of that deed and the motives are already decided, so why have a bravery award to recognise outstanding acts and only accept candidates that asked for it? Why detract from something's percieved value by making it something sought out by the person wanting the badge?

The reality is, there are hundreds of RPG products released each year.

Do you or for that matter, anyone have the time to read and evaluate everything released each year, then determine which of those should get an award ??? ...

We are talking new games, modules, supplements etc for ANY RPG, it's not just D&D, it's even for some random RPG called:
Radioactive Ninja Grasshoppers of the Front Lawn Defense League
(I hope that's not a real RPG)

Then when an award is given to someone, you have the next person hollering, my idea was better, why didn't you consider my item ?

If you want to be considered, you have to submit your material, and it has to be released during the previous Oct 1 - Oct 1 time frame... that way it only includes NEW material each year.

And like Robert has stated, there won't be an award given just because we got 2 entrees, if the item doesn't meet exacting standards the judges require, no one get's an award that year....

I can't tell you how the items will be judged, but lets just say, an item can't even be considered by the judges unless it makes a 96%+ score, so it's pretty tough

I don't have time to post all day I have a busy day... but I will say I have to disagree with this:

"Why detract from something's perceived value by making it something sought out by the person wanting the badge?"

If you have ever been in the Boy Scouts, there are hundreds of badges to be earned before you become an Eagle Scout... and no one gives you the badges.

You have to do the work, show someone you did it, or prove you've done it, then you get the badge. Otherwise, you get nothing.

I guess being recognized without asking is nice, but most things in, life you have to go out and get yourself ... this is one of 'em... if you want to win it, you have to "compete" and that means submitting your product so we know it exists...

I just didn't get the going and asking for recognition thing, is all. It jars with the whole point of recognising excellence. I might be naive in thinking other award candidates are voted for, or are not asked for by their recipients, but comparisons like Gold Medals and Boy Scout badges are erronious, because in those cases the purpose of pursuing the task is to receive the award, and the task in question is tailored to that outcome and planned in advance.

Unless that is the point here and I've missed it? To create an awared that authors will specifically tailor their output to achieve from the outset. Like specifically tailoring the writing of a book for the award it will be entered for. I'm not sure how shortlists for literary prizes are arrived at. Does Roddy Doyle or his publisher ask for the book to be considered for the prize? Or is it an independent committee of experts who draw the list from the whole industry based of informed information from the literary press and other organisations?

You are right, of course. This discussion is purely academic and moot. I have no doubt about the expertise and wisdom of the individuals involved, and the intent to do good and inspire others, which can only be good.

Doug is correct the sheer amount of RPG material released each year makes it impossible for an impartial 3rd party to just select based on merit, I certainly don't have time to read through each and every RPG publication of the year (not to mention how would I afford to get my hands on all that stuff anyway....).  The beauty of the system the way it is now, I don't have to have every heard of or read a submission for it to get entered....how much fairer can it get than that?

Hi,

actually, I have a friend who has designed his own game.

He was at Gencon Indy.

He won one of the Indy RPG awards given out there.

It was one that he didn't know he had been nominated for - and he did explain that, altho the Ennies was the "big one", the awards where other ppl nominate you are the ones the designers actually love to win - it makes them feel as tho its all worthwhile :)

Anyways, I don't really care.

I personally think, for a small convention, its maybe one more thing on the committees shoulders, when maybe sorting out more practical problems should have more call on their time?

But hey, if you reckon its a good idea - go for it and good luck!

Cheers,
Malc

The "committee" is just for the Award, has nothing to do with the Con.

The Con is the sponsor of the Award, the committee and judges only deal with the review and judging of the Award.

So it take no time away from the Con

Malcolm;

There is very little overlap between the con and the Three Castles award....there are different people involved in each, actually.

If your friend's RPG won an award then he has something to be proud of....he should read the submission guidelines and give the Three Castles award a shot.
